Hey all (first time poster here so just want to firstly say hello), Most people know Ray Robinson as the best pound-for-pund boxer of all time, I have no doubt he was an amazing boxer. My question is, what are his opinions of him as a fighter? How well would his 'style' of boxing work in the street and not in the ring. I'm just curious as I do boxing more for self defense and wondered how his fighting style would work in the street aas opposed to the ring. Any thoughts? bman100
Every time I hear his name I think boxer, but he was actually a boxer/puncher. Was always willing to trade & didn't mind taking a shot to land half a dozen. Put his punches together beautifully, basically he had everything, hence why he's the #1 P4P of all time.
He is the epitome of a boxer-puncher, all the moves and skills but in his element when he lets his hands fly.
The vast majority of street fighters you'd meet in a bar or on the corner or wherever have no answer for the jab. They run in and try to grab you or throw stupid hooks. All a boxer has to do is step inside those arcing arms with a 1-2. Sometimes you'll meet someone who moves around and does an unintentional John L. Sullivan impersonation. Step in, light him up with a jab and then shoot that right at the chin. Fight over. Robinson's 1-2 would end the life of your average street fighter, especially the ones with beer muscles. Then again, Robinson wouldn't cast his pearls among swine. He said that he was a kid, he'd readily say that he was wrong, even when the other guy was wrong, because he hated violence.
Route one stuff, has made me look like a destroyer on a couple of occassions Anty time I've actually been battered was because I was drunk; that's when I try to fight like Roy JonesNot a good idea (also what everyone seems to do at the gym, which makes them look drunk)especially when you're a little guy with a big mouth who has angered the local 'tough guy'. However. even drunk out of his skull, Robinson would annihilate your average tough guy.
He was, as they say, "sweet as sugar", with the dancing feet of the best hoofer, but flip a switch, and in the heat of battle, was a raw, savage killer who would have been too much for all his latter day namesakes and all the Sweet Peas, Roy boys and Pretty Boys that have come and gone since. A knockout may have not always been the result, but it wouldn't be out of the question either. Again, he was sweet, but also raw and savage.
We was talking about this yesterday had me in stiches, i thought you was perfecting a Limon-esque style to counter your drunken fights?
No I said I was gonna' try and stand presed up against the bar and dodge punches like Sweet Pea if you remember correctlyatsch
