Absolutely. I also think if we're going to be mentioning Valuev then guys like Pat Cowdell and Robbie Simms deserve a shout, too.

Robinson's position at number 1 was unassailable for decades. When I first started studying boxing history in the 80s there were few historians or experts that challenged his status. To do so made you look ridiculous. I recall one gent even saying "Robinson is so far ahead of the rest that there is no number 2".

But with the advent of the internet we now have easier access to boxing history; more info on all those infamous "ND" mystery bouts that clogged the records of the boxers rated just below Robinson. Researchers in recent years have made the startling discovery that guys like Benny Leonard and Harry Greb WON almost every one of those bouts, many against all-time greats and won with room to spare.

That is what I attribute the challenging of Ray Robinson(indeed even displacing in some instances) on lists as the greatest fighter of all time. It directly coincides with the era of internet research and the digitizing and availability of newspaper archives.

I used to have SRR as a solid number 1. I do not anymore. Top 5? Without a doubt. But I can no longer justify giving him a number 1 ranking. Not with all I've learned about Harry Greb.

As a sie-side-note, i think that a poster such as Boxed Ears must be considered in his totality. Aside from being one of the first to recognize that SNV's greatness transcends our current era, he cares deeply about maintaining the mores and conventions of our very civilization and traditions.

The significance and value of this attribute is impossible to overestimate.

To term such vital contribution nonsense is to visit a great and misguided slander, nay, libel, on one of our future HOFers here in the forum.

I'm of the opinion that Ray Robinson is clearly not the greatest of all time. He just seems like it at first.

Henry Armstrong is my choice for #1, however, Harry Greb pushes and pushes and pushes. He would honestly be my safe bet for a clear #1, and I'm not sure how much longer I can fall back on 'uncertainty issues' to keep Armstrong afloat.

As for Willie Pep, I never agree with people who have him outside the top ten, or who rate him below Muhammad Ali.

Let's not forget that eight years into his career Pep was 135-1-1 and had beaten a surprising amount of featherweight and lightweight contenders; in his whole career, he beat a similar number of rated fighters to Ray Robinson.

Let's not beat around the bush mate, he does not have the resume of Sugar Ray Robinson. Let's get another thing clear, Pep is legend, i do not detract at all, but i've simply stated that i think it's outright wrong for him to be over Robinson.

    Didn't say he had. It's pretty much the reason Robinson's 1 to 4 and Pep's 5 to 9.

But I didn't know anyone rated Pep over Robinson, that shouldn't really be happening.

It was mentioned on page 1, that's what my reply was to. I just assumed your Pep comment was towards mine but apologies if that wasn't the case.
