Yes in more ways than one. In the ring he was not perfect but closer to it than anyone else. He was also consistent. His record is amazing. He was beating good fighters without too many off nights.
Out of the ring maybe even better. As a negotiator he not only knew his value but had the balls to tell promoters to go pound sand. He was a pioneer in this regard. He would pull of fights if he was getting a cut of the TV $. In the 1950s.

    Ahead of his time

Close the thread....Sugar Ray Robinson was and remains the GOAT...that was one postulation that even Bert Sugar couldn't get wrong.

It’s always difficult to say who was the GOAT but it’s difficult to look past Robinson.
Not just for his resume and achievements but his actual gifts as a fighter.
Aesthetically he’s as pleasing as you can get, a master boxer with the power and attitude of a real killer with a solid chin and as tough as they come.
If he had a fault he liked to get embroiled in a brawl when sometimes he didn’t need to.
I still can’t get my head round that short low left hook that be knocked the granite chinned Fullmer out with, a man who was never knocked out on his whole career.

Depends on who you ask....boxrec.com had Archie Moore as lb for lb best But yeah, Robinson is arguably #1 and definitely top 3.

Robinson may have slugged more than we think he should have from our perspective now. In Modern times just get the win and fight smart. In the 1940s a fighter needed to be exciting to draw $. Especially a black fighter. Point is Sugar Ray could have stunk the joint out and never got touched. He would be forgotten
