Armstrong, Greb, Langford and Fitzsimmons have a case themselves, it seems.

I will take TW3 over Citizen Kane ANY DAY, my brother. :deal

Floyd fought Castillo with a messed up injured shoulder! Roy Jones fought Telesco with a fractured wrist and Hopkins 1 with a broken right hand that he broke before the fight!

    Jack Johnson.

Just my opinion due to everything he had to deal with and overcome.

C'mon now... the quality of opponent Johnson fought was abysmal. Yes, he experienced an incredible amount of prejudice but calling him the GOAT is a little ridiculous. He was the Greatest Heavyweight of his era perhaps, but far from the GOAT.

I've never seen a Robinson fight, only highlights of him like the video posted in the OP.

My question -- what would be a good fight to watch to see Robinson's boxing skills? I say this because all the highlights I see focus on Robinson looking like a brawler...very little working off the jab, not much movement around the ring, just standing there and brutalising guys. I can tell he's very fast, powerful, and throws great combinations, but that's it. He looks a little wild and open a lot of the time in those highlights, with very little evidence of good defence, so I was wondering if you guys could suggest a video where I get to see him boxing rather than slugging someone?

This. A thousand times. I want to see him boxing in a rhythm, see what his defensive tools are, see him set up the shots, see him move around.

    Not just obliterate people.

What are a few essential fights for that?

Robinson-Lamotta 6 shows you everything you need to know, a master at work vs a really good opponent.

SRR's NOT gonna dazzleya defensively, O. He could slide 'n glide, but from the opening bell, he was a STONE KILLER, with TNT in both hands 'n the heart of a lion.

Mayweather leaves purists admiring his virtuoso performances. SRR was ELECTRYFYING!

Fighters of yeateryears are overrated a bit.

Although they are fighting more frequently, but only those elite are actually training fulltime. Most boxers have days jobs like fireman, etc. Infact, even looking at their record, it is littered with fighters who holds less than 10 fights with many actually having a losing resume.

There is no scientific approach to training as well. Looking at SRR, he is sucker for certain punches as most of his punches are thrown from almost hip level.

There is not much videos to look at but from that limited videos like his fight with the raging bull, jake lamotta you can dissect techiniques and how they will fare against modern fighters. Lamotta was throwing jumping looping hooks and was landing. Their defense is not exactly very good. SRR is a tall fighter who does not exactly fights tall.

Comparing modern fighters with the past fighters based on level of activity alone like several fights in a year or toughness (like fighting injured with broken jaws) is not fair. (Ali fought with a broken jaw against Norton and among other).

The best way to assess, albeith very much subjective, is to dissect their skill or technique, their strength and weaknesses, and how they would fare against modern fighters.

I reckon that a fight between SRR and Mayweather at the right weight, Mayweather would win. It is just that styles make fight. But who can prove these things?
