What was the main reason Sugar Ray Robinson lost to Randy Turpin?

Sugar Ray was an amazing 128-1-2 before losing to Turpin.

This has to rate as one of boxing's all time best wins.

Turpin fought a great fight and I think he proved his win wasn't some fluke in the rematch even though he was beaten decisively.

Robinson had fought a busy schedule before defending his title against Turpin, including six fights in the past month in various European countries (France, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Italy), against decent opposition as well.

He may not have been as well prepared as he should have been but he certainly did not look like a diminished fighter in his past couple of fights which can all be seen on youtube.

Turpin had a really awkward but effective style which confused Robinson.

In my opinion he lost to him because Turpin, applied pressure in the form of strength behind a ramrod jab, and was consistent all night, unrelenting and uncompromising.

Of course Robinson had that hectic schedule coming up to the fight, and reports that he took the fight less than 100% seriously in my opinion are very solid, but Turpin but more than simply a shift in, was a great performance.

He either got exposed as a paper champ or was completely shot. Take your pick. :D

First of all Turpin was a very strong Middle with a hard jab,and an awkward style that negated Robinsons skill somewhat.
Second, Paris , Robinson left his fight in Paris, and not in the HIlton!

Turpin (in adition to the stylistic problems he presented) fought one of the greatest fight plans of all time.

This Louis Schmelling I in spades.

I think he just didn't know how to deal with him, Turpin was like a proto-Herol Graham, awkward in a way nobody had seen before, there are other factors like Robinson's schedule etc. The second fight was competitive too....styles make fights.

That and he was poisoned, Turpin had illegal razor sharp hair, vaseline on his legs, the referee was in Lewis' oops I mean Turpin's pocket etc.
