.................... He was so used to winning & underestimated his man.

    (see fight 2 for verification)

Robinson underestimated Turpin, and paid the price, fully.

If anything, fight 2 contradicts this. Sugar struggled again.

Robinson had a tendency not to have his best night on his most important night. His loss to Turpin is one of those times. Blame the fact that he fought 100+ times all you want, but most of those "fights" were nothing more than a way to make money. To be fair this was before big TV pay days. However, they were still meanless exbitions.
Another for Robinson's loss to Turpin as well as Fullmer and Basillo. Is that despite the fact Robinson had all the tolls in the world he did not always use them. He'd often fight when he should have boxed. Lenghth is the best weopen in boxing when used. Robinson did not always use his, and it cost him more than once.

There are parrallels with the first Ali-Norton fight here. Ray took Randy far too lightly.

because he did enough, but just!

and most of you won't be in the understanding of Refereee Henderson's position with the BBBofC.

he was severely scrutinized after he stopped Mills v Lesnevich I, with only a few seconds left,
Henderson was DISGUSTED by their questioning that he resigned... stating over and above his Top Flight resume, a referee although having a good idea that a round is near ending, that they don't know 'precisely' to the literal second and especially under such gruelling punishment and elevated excitement - that a good referee has only the welfare of the fighter in mind - Mills was getting battered, and even another 10 or 15 seconds could have cost a fighter his life!

He told the Board politely to get stuffed... he returned a few years later, but Mills already had his second attempt at the World Title and won it. If he hadn't have Eugene Henderson 'might' not have been reinstated - such was the despostic iron fist rule of the BBBofC - Mills now had the title all was forgiven.

Turpin 'squeaked' it, but Eugene Henderson was very nervous about the outcome of this fight... consideration indeed!

the BBBofC were _UNTS back then, Old Boys Club forsure with Solomons among the financing and Old "Young" Snowball (Ted Broadribb), the elite Manager & Matchmaker, unrepentent *******s all!!!

    exactly, Al.

Robinson might not have been at his very best, but i expect he still won a heluva lot of fights while at a similar level.Probably never gts mentioned if Ray wins.

Incidentally, ripcity's incompetence is a comforting constant on this forum these days.
