Toney proved that he could be very good even at 217 pounds, enough to me. Robinson would not beat toney at 175
We are talking about a 175 fatty version of robinson ,taking in count that toney was always fast with his hands it is not crazy to think that he would be faster than a fat version of robinson
Robinson wouldn't be a fatty. He almost won the 175 title at 157 1/2 pounds. He's good enough and smart enough not to add unnecessary bulk.
He lost , maxim actually was not a great thing, ray got gassed because the hot and BECAUSE HE HAD to run all the fight in chicken mode obviously because he was facing a bigger guy.there are weight classes for a reason my friend john
Toney was no different at light heavyweight than at any other weight. He got robbed twice against Griffin.
Ray was comfortably outboxing Maxim, a very good 175'er. Put him in normal conditions and particularly over 12 rounds and he'd be fine particularly against Toney. It's a competitive match i reckon.
These were the guys Joey Maxim was tangling with in the late 40's, early 50's: Joe Walcott, Bob Satterfield, Jimmy Bevins, Gus Lesvenich, Freddie Mills, Ezzard Charles (2), SRR, Archie Moore (3), & Floyd Patterson. Losing to the very top guys, but always competitive. Beat both SRR & Floyd Patterson, and the lessor fighters.
Assuming we don't give Toney any chance to rehydrate, I'd give Robinson a chance. It would make more sense to make this matchup at middle or super middle though.
Patterson was very green when he fought maxim, he was around 19 and was not fully developed phisically, a prime patterson was a "cruiser'" not a lhw. Prime patterson would destroy maxim without a doubt
Patterson vs Maxim. Gotta go with what actually happened in the ring when their paths crossed. All the rest is just speculation.
