On the topic of idiocy, I’d argue that watching an edited, grainy film of Robinson and thinking it’s like watching him from ringside with Archie Moore is better qualified.
Floyd would never fight him for starters, but if he did he would not have an answer for Robinson’s superior ring IQ. Robinson wins every round.
You're right. Some of those with preconceived notions would admit that the film doesn't support the reputation.
Nearly 40 y.o. Mosley hurt Floyd badly twice and Floyd held him for dear life to not get KO'd in round 2. Prime Robinson was way better than Mosley. Bigger. More skilled. Way higher ring IQ. Against Robinson Floyd better has to run across the ring to avoid getting KO'd. Staying against the ropes and trying to potshot Robinson wouldn't be successful strategy.
I hate these type of fantasy matchups because when I analyze a fight, I'm looking at flaws, attributes and what would work vs would not work against the matchup. With Floyd, it's much easier to do because all of his fights are on film. I have seen Floyd face guys who had a reach advantage over him. I have seen Floyd face speed. I have seen Floyd face athletic fighters, taller fighters, durable fighters, etc. I cannot say the same for Robinson. It's not because he hasn't, it's because it's not on film. I have to make a lot of assumptions based on how he fought against Lamotta, Fulmer, Basilio, Turpin, etc. as if they fight anything like Floyd. I would have loved to see the Gavilan fights for example. I'm making some assumptions with Floyd as well in terms of how he would do against someone with the fluidity of Robinson in terms of his movement but I can at least say I have seen Floyd fight people with athletic feet. Of the Robinson fights I have seen, no one he fought would be considered athletic. None were fast with their hands or feet. None looked anywhere near as skilled as Floyd. So yeah, I could say Robinson would wash Floyd but it would be way more based on his legacy rather than an actual analysis.
Ray Robinson was a destroyer in the ring and Floyd was the opposite, exceptional defense but carefully chosen opponents, Ray Robinson would be completely wrong for Floyd, a large number of fights and wars in the ring and Floyd would never allow himself to have to fight Ray Robinson...
Robinson did get hit a bit didn’t he? Like he’d still kill Mayweather but it’s a valid criticism… I think he might’ve fought a bit more aggressive than he had to for gate appeal, lest he wind up Burley…
