Ray landed a right cross that was solid, yet didn't hurt Olson. Right after, a left hook and right cross did hurt Olson a little bit. Ray landed good uppercuts and hooks all through the round. The rolling done by both men really stood out to me in this round especially. Both rolled beautifully. Olson effectively blocked some of Robinson's jabs and hooks. Robinson. 3. Ray doubled up a left hook beautifully. Robinson. 4. Ray led with a right at the bell, and a fair one I might add. Robinson counters Olson a lot, but not punches. He counters Olson's advances. While in close, Robinson fights his way out with a right uppercut and two left hooks. Robinson. 5. Olson took some play away from Ray for once, coming in with left hooks to the body, then clinching. Olson. 6. The first good exchanges of the fight occurred here, primarily in the last minute. Robinson. 7. Generally speaking, this was one of the most action-packed rounds. They were both pretty busy, and Ray threw a lot of punches. Olson threw a hard low blow which only ensured he lost the round. He showed good sportsmanship about it though. Robinson. 8. Ray dealt Olson a brutal body beating, and in the typical quick fashion he does so. However, at times he chopped away at Olson in almost a Frazier-like fashion. I wondered if that was a sign of Ray's tiring. Robinson. 9. Olson had one of his better rounds; he was able to land several decent right hands, but ultimately still got outworked by Robinson. Robinson. 10. At the halfway point of the round, Robinson landed a left hook and a double right hook. Afterwards they both fought pretty actively. Robinson slipped while throwing a left hook right before the bell. Again, Olson showed good sportsmanship, backing off. Robinson. 11. A round that more clearly resembled classic Ray Robinson. Moving around well, head and shoulder feints abounded, and a stiff jab was kept in Olson's face. The best exchange of the entire fight (I think) was produced near the beginning of the round. Most importantly, Ray made a big improvement in his game plan. When Olson advanced in, he always threw a hook to the body while doing so. Earlier in the match, Ray would tie Olson up right after Olson moved in, but here Ray threw left hooks after Olson came in with his. Overall, it was probably Ray's most dominant round. Never had Olson look so intimidated and so shaken up. Ray threw everything he had at Olson, and while Olson was never in trouble, he had never looked in worse shape. Robinson. 12. Ray moved around a lot, clinching and landing good flurries here and there. He landed one of his classic 1-2's, which was pretty powerful. Robinson. 13. Ray came at Olson with full force in the last 30 seconds or so, and I thought Olson had better be concerned. Robinson. 14. I believe Ray's two-fisted body attacks are draining Olson of his reserves. Robinson. 15. I noticed here how Olson often minimized how effective Ray's punches were by moving inside of Ray's arms. However, in this round more than most, Ray threw and connected at will. A left hook right before the bell hurt Olson. Robinson. 14-1 for Robinson. And none of the rounds were really that close. Olson simply did not throw much. It struck me as neat when Olson bowed to Robinson right after the final bell rang to end the fight. Verdict: If you're looking for excitement, you wouldn't reach for this one. It was a rather mediocre delivery. It was busy enough that you can't complain. It was interesting to see the conflict that arose from their clashing styles though. Compared to many of Ray's other fights, for instance his wins over LaMotta, Turpin, Graziano, and MW wins in the mid-to late-50s, this was a poor Ray performance. He seemed to tire early and did not close in the most glamorous fashion. It is just one more testimony though to the Sugarman. He seemed spent, Olson came on decently, and Ray summoned back his reserves to sweep the last several rounds with increasing ease, and even hurt Olson a little bit in the finale. I should also add that I did find Olson fun to watch. As I said, he threw very little and he was not really a hard puncher either, but he had an unusual stance I found interesting, and he was a very good defensive fighter, which surprised me. I would say that some things could be gotten out of watching this fight.
