I'll take Monzon. MW is ok for SRR to a point, but that point stops at the very best MW's in history. I think Monzon's calculating style and size will be too much for SRR to overcome, and I'd take him on points.

 

Monzon's superior athleticism takes over in later rounds as he walks down Walker.

 

Don't base your decision on a sub par, less than at his best performance by Monzon...and that's what the 2nd Griffith match was. Monzon was in the ring for the first time since getting shot twice in the shoulder & arm by his wife at the time. One bullet was removed, and the other one stayed in him....Jose Napoles acknowledged, made mention of this before their meeting in 1974 in assessing his chance vs Carlos. If you refer to the 1st meeting between Monzon & Griffith for a more accurate result. Why not then choose a low point performance by the less than consistent SRR as the criteria for him as well? Monzon was, in my opinion, and interestingly enough, in the opinion of Mike Tyson as well, uniquely qualified and equipped....height and reachwise, as well as being a cold, unflappable, guy with an extra high ring IQ...stamina to easily go 15 rounds. Monzon was a superior fighter to LaMotta, Turpin, Basilio, and certainly the likes of Paul Pender.
I'm noy saying that Monzon is superior P4P....that title goes to SRR for keeps IMO,...but Monzon was the better middleweight champion and was the better man H2H. All my opinion

 

SRR was the better fighter and at his MW best, I think he wins.

 

I like Carlos Monzon to beat Ray at 160. Not that I'd whine about anyone picking Sugar Ray Robinson! They'd probably split 2 fights

 

Couldn't disagree more with you there KuRuPT,...but that's what makes this a boxing forum. You can have a differing opinion and still not be assholes to one another.

 

Robinson had more weapons. His chances of connecting with the left hook are excellent and once that happens, Monzon would definitely be hurt. Smelling blood, Robbie opens up like only he can, and Carlos crumbles like a cheap deck of cards.

Not many other middleweights superior to Monzon as only Hagler, Jones, and Robinson would best him in battle.

Monzon is a huge middleweight which could be defining in this fight.

Robinson is the best boxer ever imo, however he was beatable at middleweight.

If they fought 5 times I believe they would draw 1 of them and share 2 wins apiece.

Let me differ with you in how you view the first and second Griffith bouts, in the first Emile though slow as in the second did not generate an offence but he did slip and block and as in the second go Carlos could not tag him with a solid shot. In the 14th round Emile's legs cramped badly and though bent from the waist and really a sitting duck Carlos couldn't hit him, his shots going over Emile's back. It was seeing that live and then the second go where old man Emile tagged Carlos throughout and again wasn't hit solidly through 15 rounds. Those 29 rounds give every indication that Robby would tag Carlos and much harder then Emile and for me that a prime Emile would have taken the decision himself over Monzon.
