I've been reading that the 3rd fight was a bad decision and deserved to go to Robinson but was called a draw for those who have seen the fight did you think Robinson deserved the nod or was it right to call it a draw
I thought Robinson boxed his ears off. I believe that fight was in Los Angeles. It was that last great fight he had. He was spinning Fullmer and catching him with clean right hands. Gene was mindful of that left hook that had stretched him a few years before. Just that little bit of time and room Fullmer gave him allowed Sugar Ray to get off his combinations.
I don't think I've seen it. The score cards were certainly divergent! 1960-12-03 : Gene Fullmer 159 lbs drew with Sugar Ray Robinson 158¾ lbs by PTS in round 15 of 15 Location: Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA Referee: Tommy Hart 4-11 Judge: Lee Grossman 9-5 Judge: George Latka 8-8 https://news.google.com/newspapers?...00,494953&dq=sugar+ray+robinson+fullmer&hl=en
I had Robinson a winner. Not only did he outbox Gene but as usual Gene got away with tons of dirty work.
Interesting,I'm not a fan of Fullmer ,[ neither was Giardello,] but when interviewed he did have a sense of humour.
Im not a fan either. He just rubs me the wrong way. He was incredibly dirty and yet whined whenever anyone paid him back in kind. He got the benefit of the doubt more times than anyone I can remember. I mean, if you fought him west of the Rockies you carried a loss or a draw with you into the ring, the fight had already been decided. I agree his demeanor outside the ring is totally at odds with his "in the ring" personality. In the ring he was perfectly happy to foul, cheat, have his management stack the deck, and even sneak his small training ring to be used for his defenses. Then when the fight was over he returned to his the good natured "gee whiz" hick persona.
Giardello hated Fullmer. When they fought the fight was in Fullmer's "backyard" (I use this term loosely because in the mountain states Fullmer was very popular and at home there) and just like he did to Robinson the following year Fullmer was allowed to swap the regulation ring with his own training ring. Then when the fight started Fullmer began using dirty tactics, mauling, wrestling, excessive clinching, low blows, rabbit punches, and most notably headbutts. Giardello complained to the ref, Harry Kessler, but the ref just told him to keep fighting so he did what a pro is supposed to do in that situation and took matters into his own hands paying back Fullmer in kind. This time Fullmer whined to the referee and Giardello was the one that was warned. After that Fullmer fought a completely negative fight, just clinching every chance he got and slapping on the inside. Giardello did all of the clean boxing and punching and then came the bull**** draw verdict, one of three bull**** draws Fullmer got in title fights, all of which he should have gotten an "L" in. Afterwards Fullmers entourage got into a near physical confrontation in the ring and the local police came down on the side of Fullmer, harrassing Giardello and his people. I cant remember if it was Harry Kessler in this fight or Ruby Goldstein in the first Robinson fight that when criticized for letting Fullmer get away with every dirty trick in the book gave the bull**** excuse that this was the only way Fullmer knew how to fight. Ive always found it strange that Giardello hated Kessler so much for this fight yet despite Kessler letting Fullmer foul Kessler was the only official to vote for Giardello in the fight. That being said Archie Moore hated Kessler as well and thought, like Giardello, that Kessler was crooked.
Moore claimed Kessler gave Marciano a long count in their fight. The tape doesn't seem to support this contention.
No it doesnt but didnt Kessler give him a standing 8 and the 8 count had been waved? I thought that was the story there. Either way Moore wasnt beating Marciano that night. But Moores feud with Kessler stretched way back before Marciano. I believe all the way back to Moores amateur days. Moore started out in St. Louis where Kessler was based, they had known each other a very long time by the Marciano fight.
Robinson should have won that fight but of course the draw was made. I like Fullmer but he was dirty as hell lol.
