Were these two fights filmed? Amazing that the two best WW's of all time fight twice and its not recorded. I've read the 2nd fight was Robinsons best fight. (although I've read some of the oldtime philly guys said his best fight was his 1 round KO of Sugar Conster in 1950, I think it was probably like Jones's brutal KO of Griffin. SRR was annoyed that Costner took his name and wanted to punish him over a long fight, but decided against it because of Costners' height and decided to take him out quickly instead.) Considering how these guys were stars and it was a championship fight I'm surprised theres not a lot of detail on them. Our own John Garfield was at one of the fights I think, would like to hear his opinion on it. I remember also that it was said they were filmed but Gavilan made SRR look bad so to avoid his marketability being hurt, they were destroyed, dont beleive it though, who knows.? Anyway, any info on these bouts would be appreciated from anyone.

I've never actually read anything on Gavilan giving Robinson major trouble in either bout, but it is purpotrated a lot here, could anyone shed some light otherwise for me? (as admittadly I have only done basic research)

I recall it have been mentioned in "was this fight ever filmed" thread that one collector has the footage of both of their fights. No proof was presented though.

I seem to remember someone saying in the first fight it was only a very small part of the crowd that were kicking off about the decision, most people thought it was fair.

Could have been JG or burt, could be wrong.

The rematch I think was a fairly clear victory for Robinson. About as emphatic a victory as anyone could have over Gavilan.

Thats a real shame. Is it possible the bout could have been filmed without being televised? I think I've heard many fights around this period happened that way. They were later shown in theatres.

And yeah, any controversy around the fight is only the first one in 48'. He may have struggled with him and later solved him as he did with many opponents like Turpin, Fullmer etc. In 1949, is was said that Ray beat the Kid decisvely.

In the first fight, Ray said he fought aggressivley at first and at one point hit Gavilan with the hardest punch he ever threw and Gavilan just shook it off and kept coming, after this Ray boxed more and beat him that way. He repeated that in their second fight.

The first fight was close because Ray made it that way to generate interest in a title bout.
Kid then got his title shot and and ass whipping.

You mean in 1948, SRR never actually struggled against Gavilan and just made it look like he did?

Yes, like Langford before him and Moore after him. This is something vanished from modern boxing.

Thats pretty amazing, Gavilan is the best WW after SRR for me and definetly in the top ten and that Ray didn't find him a challenge at all shows how far and above he was from all the other guys. Wished they filmed the bout. We know Ray's title fight with Tommy Bell was filmed, if it exists it would be agreat fight to watch.

Amazing indeed especially considering the middleweights SRR beat down leading up to these 2 vs Gavi. Middleweights ruin Welterweights.
SRR always lives up to all his hype in my book no doubt.

I sometimes forget how great Sugar Ray Robinson really was. I like being reminded.
