Duran can win this fight. I'd like to read how you think he would though. What would he do that would get him the win? How would he overcome the strengths of the greatest WW ever?

A lot of it is faith in Duran. The performance against leonard in the first fight was something special, something you might see but a few times during a lifetime of watching sports.

Leonard's power is often overlooked but Robinson hits on a par with Hearns at 147. But Duran slipped so many of Leonard's shots and Leonard was as quick and as accurate a puncher as anyone, Robinson included.

What Robinson brings IMO is even more versatility and more skill.

I accept the argument on LaMotta but Duran was a far more skilled fighter, and more impornantly Roberto had speed. He was an explosive fighter who, like Robinson has a number of gears to move through. So if Jake was the blueprint, a bigger and stronger one granted, then Duran is the more compact, speedier, more skilled version.

I can't tell you Robinson's prime fight at 147 and maybe this is why I lean towards Duran. Duran's is clearly definable. I guess I'm looking at Robinson 46-49... he beat a string of excellent 147 fighters. He also beat an ATG in Gavilan (twice). The left hook-straight right combos used so effectively by Docusen and Levine against Robinson were there all night for Duran against Leonard. And this is what I'd be pinning my hopes on.

Robinson liked to trade when he decided the time was right and those would be Duran's moments.

Hey, I'm hardly convincing myself but i believe Duran had the tools and the ego to stand on Robinson's toes at least once at 147.

That is sound reasoning. However, as good as Duran's defense and countering skills were, he doesn't want to trade too much with Robinson. Crowd him, don't give him punching room, and rip him up at the ribcage where he is probably least dangerous and where the shorter, stronger, mauling Duran is most dangerous ... that would be the best chance for Duran. If Robinson is able to keep Duran at arm's length, then this fight may be more of a one-sided affair.

Robinson would not be able to keep Duran off him. His jab simply wasn't good enough to do so, and he wasn't one to fight off the backfoot against a fighter of Duran's stature. I see Duran getting the better of the inside exchanges generally, though Robinson's combination punching would more than likely leave many impressions on Duran when the fight was at mid range. Would be a hell of a fight IMO, certainly no one-sided affair. Duran was just too skilled to write off, even against the Sugar Man.

These are two of my all time favorite fighters.
How would a fight unfold between these two greats? The above posts have been facinating reading with solid reasoning backing their respective opinions.
My two cents is this: The Montreal Duran was simply incredible. Duran is one of those rare fighters when at times, it seems, logic was beaten down for a ten count...He would perform at a level which was amazing. Montreal was one of the greatest performances of sheer willpower to overcome and beat an opponent, that I've ever seen! Duran and Leonard took each other to hell and back that night.
Much has been noted re Robinson's lack of strength on the inside, which to a point is true...But I honestly think Robinson may be short changed by this opinion. Why? Primarily because of the way Robinson engaged nearly all of his opponents regardless of whether they were larger or stronger. Giving up considerable poundage to an ATG middleweight in LaMotta, and even while fighting at an advanced age, and following a layoff against some very rough middleweights such as a Fullmer who would have been a tough night for anyone weighing in at middle. I believe Robinson's willingness to engage and invite exchanges stems from the confidence he had in himself, and the power he carried in both hands to hurt an opponent...If you say Robinson wasn't strong fighting on the inside...That may be your opinion, but I'd have to say he was very successful fighting that way.
The difference between Robinson and Hearns...and it's pure speculation on my part, but Hearns would seem to be a better one shot hitter (Joe Louis even said as much) but Robinson carried considerable sock in both hands with a perfected and varied delivery of knock out punches.Robinson would present as the more dangerous opponent due to his variety of finishing blows, coming from either the left or right hand.
    The fight?
Duran does carry the fight to Robinson, with some success...But pressing Leonard and pressing Robinson (despite Leonard's greatness) are two different things. Duran would pay a steep price pressuring Ray. While Duran could smother and attempt to work the body, Robinson's uppercuts and hooks are very accurate and carry alot of snap...Robinson's right uppercut was sometimes timed as a counter to a left jab, he had that kind of timing...a vicious right hand to the body was Robinson's calling card...and that would set up his best punch the left hook, either in close or from the outside.
As great as Duran is...IMO I can't see him having the durabilty to consistantly push and attack Robby for fifteen rounds, like he did with Leonard. IMO, Duran would have to back off and fight a more tactical fight. Which he has demonstrated considerable counter punching ability.
but for my money...I'll take Robinson by UD.

Contradicting ourselves are we? I'm done because i am not trying to get banned on this site. Its just laughable that someone tells me that i don't know what I am talking about and turns around and go over what he already said.

Poor wording on my part. Robinson had the power to deter Duran, but he didn't have the boxing ability/jab to keep him at bay. That was what I was referring to.

robinson builds a good lead but duran eventually gets to his body and comes on stronger and stronger after the 9th round. whether he can close the gap between the 9th and 15th i cant say.. i estimate if they fought a hundred times robinson wins probably 65 of them..

There is some truth in your argument,ie that lamotta and Basilio both gave Robinson problems ,but I don't think it was primarily because ,they were,"inside pressure fighters" ,so much as the fact that one was a middleweight and against Basilio ,Robinson was 37 years old.
