Thomas Hearns shows the importance of chin. If he had a slightly better chin he would of been the best of the Fab 4 instead of the worst.
Robinson is the better boxer. Hearns is the bigger man and he's a outstanding boxer as well. Both men can punch Hearns is the better puncher. I'm tempted to say that Robinson has the better chin, but Hearns's chin is not as bad as some might think. I think this comes down to two factors, The first is who's chin can hold up the longest. I'd pick Robinson by late round stoppage. The second is that based on what little footage I have seen of Robinson at welterweight. He liked to mix it up rather than use his size advantage. This is something that Hearns can exploite with his reach. If this happens py pick would be Hearns by late round stoppage. If they go to the score cards I see Robinson getting the decision.
um he already didn't KO Leonard and got KO'd by him so....... Hearns is my favorite fighter ever and aside from Leonard and SRR would beat anyone ever at 147 but he's too chinny for SRR.
Robinson stops Hearns with Hearns up on the cards. If Hearns had an Iron Chin he would be in GOAT discussion.
I know Tommy very well and he was a masterclass, I am undeed very sorry for the state of the economy in the States and the wellfare of old time greats. SRR was still alive in one of the broadcasts I have seen when larry holmes was fighting I believe. It's difficult to make it out cause SRR lost, drew and won in rematches against many guys ( 173-19-6) - Gene Fullmer, Randy Turpin, Carmen Basillio but that was from 1952 0n and after having tried at LHWT and the famous loss at the Yankee Stadium to Joey Maxim ( one TKO loss in the 14th round) and Tommy Hearns ( 68-5-1) in a completely different era basically was a WW who outgrew that Division, was sucessful against Benitez and Duran at LMW ( when there was nothing like that in the SRR era) and had major losses at MW to Hagler, Barkley and a draw against SRL ( if you consider SMW a part of MW in SRR terms) but then he was successful against DeWitt and Roldan ( absolutely devastating) and Olajide in the late part of his career and after the upset draw against leonard in the rematch. He was absolutely devastating at LHWT against Andries and beat the previously undefeated Virgil Hill but lost again to Barkley who seemed to have his number. His career at CW in the late part of his career and the loss to Grant don't mean anything at all. So and in resume, you got to pick in each weight they would fight rather than just thinking about styles ( speed, main weapons, boxing IQ) and sizes ( height, arm length, muscular apparatus). At MW, Hearns loses according to their history. At LHWT, Tommy wins big. And alil bit below MW, it's difficult to tell but somehow I guess that even at 6'1'' at 78'' of reach and SRR at 5'11'' tall and just 72'' of reach, SRR had too much Ring IQ, Self Confidence, Flair and Speed ( mind, footwork and handspeed) to produce the same result SRL did against Hearns in their first fight.
Honestly think to the naked eye Hearns is the most devastating fighter to ever step in the ring. With the proper knowledge and insight into this fight though, SRR ko anytime after the 6th round. He wouldn't take as long as Leonard to unleash.
In his fight with Leonard Hearns was in retreat and trying to box after about the fifth round. Leonard stalked him the rest of the fight . Hearns could never beat Ray Robinson , he'd be ko'ed brutally and collapse in a broken heap. He be lucky to see the 8th round
