Spectators and Experts of the time who saw both Bob Fitzimmons and Joe Louis thought Fitzsimmons would have knocked Joe Louis out. What do you say about that? I say "experts" of the times are very bias. We have our own two eyes, we can judge ourselves. I disagree, it was one of the better featherweight eras. Sandy Saddler lost to guys like Humberto Sierra and Phil Terranova and Jock Leslie which shows you the quality of the era. Eddie Compo and Miguel Acevedo two terrific fighters. What about it? A naturally much smaller Willie Pep lost a close controversial decision to an ATG lightweight. Big deal. Pep never got the chance to prove himself superior in a rematch. Robinson in his book said Willie Pep was smaller. I wouldnt be suprised if robinson had a good 5-10lb on Pep, 5lb means alot when you weigh 112lb. Trust me, as a former lightweight Collegiate Wrestler I know. There was no boxing skills/boxing art that Willie Pep couldnt do. You could not outpoint a prime willie pep if you were in his weight class. Best all around boxer of all time. Robinson was not immune to criticism. Robinsons defense was very shaky. Willie Pep was the far better BOXER than robinson. pep had much better footwork, he was alot more smooth in his movement, he had a better jab, and he was more intelligent. Yes, but don't underrate willie pep. he stopped quite a few durable top 10 oppontents. Willie Peps fluid 4-6 punch combinations were some of the best combinations ever thrown. Even if they did lack robinson's power. We will disagree here. Pep certainly had the faster feet and faster upperbody movement. Robinson slightly faster hands. considering Willie Pep had no problems getting in and out of range on a 5'11 freak of nature sandy saddler outboxing him on the cards in 3 of the 4 fights, I doubt you can make this claim. Robinson on the other hand, never fought a tall middleweight so his range here is unproven. He also never took on some of the best welterweights of his era like Burley, Cocoa Kid. Pep fought all of the best of his era at 126lb. No one was more of a natural boxer than Pep. He invented things. Joe Rein said Pep didnt even try that hard in the gym, then went out there in the ring and put on a show with his god given gifts. Your Wrong. Pep was that special. Best technical Boxer of all time, best defense, and best footwork. I dont see how robinson looks better on film. Two different styles. I dont think ive seen anyone more athletically capable of moving around the ring and controlling the ring generalship the way Willie Pep did. Willie Pep is very underrated in the offensive department. Pep threw fast fluid spectcular 4-6 punch combinations that were way ahead of his time. Now these combinations did not pocess the power in robinsons punches, but they were just as accurate, fast, sharp, and fluid as robinsons combinations. Save your breath on Burley. robinson at 160lb hit MUCH harder than Burley. You overrate Burley. Burley was great, but he was no better than the rest of the murders row. He deserves no more respect than Marshall, Williams, and Booker.
