    Hi everyone.

I just watched one of Robinson - Lamottas fight. The judge stopped the fight after a terrible beating.
I haven´t seen that much of Robinson, but I have to say that I start to understand where Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Roy Jones jr found great inspiration.
I always rated Ali nr 1 and Leonard nr 2 since I haven´t seen much of Robinson. I understand now that I have to check out some more, I doubt I will rate him over Ali, cause he´s almost a housegod here, but never the less i want to see more.
Now to my question. What fight´s should I start with, Robinson had a lot and i would like to start with his best performances.
I would be very grateful for some advices.
    All the best

Well The Great A has given you more than enough right there, to last you for a while anyway. The thing with Robinson is that the very very vast majority of the footage of him is when he is past his prime, fighting as a middleweight. And even that is more than impressive. To really understand how great he was it's worth studying his record and the era in general (in terms of his early career). For example his two points decision victories over one of the finest welterweights ever in Kid Gavilan, one of the biggest shames in boxing history that they are not captured on film (all tragedies apart)

Within 10 months of Robinson's pro debut, he defeated the lightweight champion (Sammy Angott) in a non-title bout.

3 months after that, he beat HOFer Fritzie Zivic who was 3 months removed from being the welterweight champion. He repeated the trick 3 months later, this time winning by a stoppage.

That shows you how good he was and quick he developed from the onset of his career.

His KO over Gene Fullmer in the rematch is considered one of the greatest punches ever thrown.

I have watched a lot of Sugar Ray Robinson over the past couple of days and a new favourite is born, he he! he´s nr 2 or 3 on my list.
Ali, aspecially the Ali from the 60´s is nr 1 and will always be.
Sugar Ray Leonard has been nr 2 for such a long time (since he beat Hagler) so it´s hard to move him down as well, but it feels wrong to put Robinson as nr 3 since i can imagine he was great influences to both Ali, and Leonard. I will put him on nr 2 as well, Leonard slightly ahead by me cause of the Hagler fight.

    1. Ali
    2. SRL and SRR
    4.Frazier
    5. Tyson
    6 Roy Jones jr

Yes, I do like the flashy style.
Thanks for the links to the Robinson fight´s, I didn´t know where to start.
it has been a great pleasure watching them and others of his fight´s

I think you should also check out some Willie Pep, Whitaker, Tunney, Charles, Walcott, Louis, Hearns, Patterson, and Moore as a start to try digging into boxing.

As for Robinson, I love the two fights with Basilio (Past his prime though).

Btw, IMHO SRR above Ali and SRL. You'll probably like Whitaker and Pep seeing as you like the flashy guys. You might appreciate Tunney too. Have fun and enjoy watching classic boxing :bbb :thumbsup

    Hi.
I´ve seen most of the heavyweight´s, I have all heavyweight titlefight´s on VHS since jack johnson up to mid 90´s, me and my father collected them, well he paid for them so I guess it was his collection, when he died I took care of them.
Charles, Walcott, Tunney, Patterson and Louis where all good, real true champions.
Willie Pep is a fighter I haven´t seen what I can remember, so I have to check him out. Hearns, one of the four, the real hitman.
Whitaker is another fighter I will check out, seen a couple of clips on him, and he´s great.
Funny enough, I like the flashy style, I haven´t seen anything of Roy jones jr before some fight´s on youtube for a couple of month´s so I have a lot of cathing up to do.
Naseem Hamed was flashy, but I think he did to much stuff that almost made him look silly, not one of my favourites.
But one thing is sure, boxing is the best thing and thanks for youtube!

IMO...SRR is the finest boxer-puncher that ever lived...did'nt punch quite as hard as Tommy Hearns or Roy Jones for that matter....was'nt quite defensive as SweetPea or Pep...hell even Floyd Mayweather for that matter..

But the one thing that put Sugar Ray above everyone else IMO...was the combination of power and defense...the combinations he layed on Lamotta in their six fights...the fifth one especially are a sight to be hold...The first fighter I saw who could punch going backwards...KO power at that...His biggest asset was his heart.SRR had one of the biggest hearts ever...and that's saying a lot if you think about cats like Ali,Marciano,etc..

I'm reminded why I love this game everytime I watch Sugar Ray fight...He was,and always will be the GOAT.

I started with the Sugar Ray Robinson pound for pound video.

That gave me the urge to find as many full fights or long highlight vids of the man, Ali is my all time fav fighter & he was no1 on my list for ages but after seeing enough & finding out more about the whole career of Robinson, I came to the conclusion that no boxer should be higher than SRR (& yes, that includes Langford)

Why the general consensus among Boxing fans is that Robinson was the best to have ever laced them up.
