SRR was a mean body puncher but there is the same shot I always see in his fights, he feints with a left jab then throws a right hook-esque punch to the body yet it seems to be thrown really awkwardly, watch the fourth round and you will see it, hes landing with the back of his knuckles, its also in some highlights against basilio in slow motion- look at 6:19 to 6:27, he throws it 4 times and doubles up with it with the right hand at the end. (When he doubles it, you can see it at it's best) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ISV4lNTMLs[/ame]

What type of shot is this, its as though he's turned his whole arm and landing very awkwardly but effectively, Lamotta winces when he has been hit by that shot. It looks like you could break your arm by twisting it that far when throwing a punch, I always was amazed by it. Stonehands I think called it Ray's "candy cane" shot. I quote: "Ray Robinson’s “candy-cane” shot. Robinson would feint a jab and throw a right hook to the kidney. His glove would turn around mid-flight so that the back of his knuckles would land." But what is the technique of it, and why did Ray throw it this way? In short, who has more info on this type of punch? (which Ray always used as a speciality)...

it's an awkward punch. I've seen other fighters throw it, but none as fluid and often as Robinson. Kalambay threw this punch well

    :huh

That is not what I see from 6:19 to 6:27...

At 6:17 he throws a normal right uppercut. His next punch doesn't land until 6:23 and it's a left hook - after he misses one of those candy cane shots over the back (ducked) set up by a slipped set-up jab. Then he doubles it up (landing it both times).

    Watch again:

    6:17 uppercut lands.
6:18-6:19 nothing happens as both weave
    6:20 set up jab
6:21 attempted candy cane is ducked
    6:22 left hook loaded up
6:23 left hook to the body lands
    6:24 candy cane loaded up
    6:25 first candy cane lands
    6:26 candy cane loaded up
    6:27 second candy cane lands

He throws it three times during that sequence, that I see (missing once and landing twice). :think

I accidently counted the left hook, so he throws it 3 times, landing twice, the point of the film was just to show the punch, I think but i'm not sure it was always the right hand that this shot was used with.

Not many views, seriously no one has anything substantial on this?

I just wanted to make sure the timestamps you provided were indeed what we're supposed to be looking at (although that doubled-up punch does pretty well match your description of it). :good

It is a good punch, and clearly hurts Carmen as he clinches up immediately. It may have been more a habit that Ray developed in the course of throwing the right hand to the body, just finding it easier to turn over the back end of his glove to expedite contact rather than try to change his angle to zero in with the traditional scoring area (the front flats of the two knuckles closest to the thumb) rather than a specific weapon drafted up by design.

possible. But i think someone like john garfield would know about this, any technical question you have on srr's style he knows the answer because he learned from the man himself...stonehands probably has something on it too because he mentions it a couple times. it looks very dangerous, but i think you are right the knuckles hitting the body causes more damage than the padded are, the top of the glove has less padding so the punch would hurt more...makes sense.

It's just a right hand to the body, sort of loopingly angled so it can get past the defensive positions Basilio has put himself in.

McCallum often threw his rights to the body like that, hooked around the left arm of an orthodox opponent from the outside.

Ray often threw this punch I always thought it was cool looking. He was actually DQ'd with this punch against "Gerhard Hecht" but was later ruled a no contest as the kidney punch was allowed in the U.S. Big George hasn't been mentioned yet he picked this punch up as a older man and watch the video below he actually moves "Bert Cooper" with the punch.

    Ray Robinson 1:08 in...[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsXfQBUkIv8[/ame]

    Big George 2:25 in......[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekpJZVoXwJo[/ame]

salvador sanchez used it a lot as well.

especially against Pat Cowdell where he was allowed to get away with fouling with it throughout the entire fight, as he struggled with Cowdell's canny defensive positioning.Cowdell's back was marked up bright red.

It's basically an overhand right/right hook to the body. Lots of fighters used to use it. Basilio lands one himself shortly after Ray does.

There are different schools of thought on when a punch should be delivered with the fist vertical or horizontal. This is usually concerning the hook. Some, like Kenny Weldon, believe a hook should be delivered with the knuckles held horizontally on short hooks, and vertical on longer range hooks. It's almost universal that straight punches should land with the knuckles held in a horizontal position.

When you land a punch in the horizontal position, you want to point of impact to be on your index and middle knuckles. You want to use the middle, ring, and pinkie on vertical blows.

Ray is attempting to land the punch with his knuckles in the horizontal position, and is trying to make the point of impact his index and middle knuckles.
