I love Robinson but I've seen him tagged by multi punch combinations repeatedly. I acknowledge that he was at his best as a welterweight and the bulk of the footage available is at 160 but I resent him being called "flawless" because there are gaping holes in his defence. In terms of speed, power, ability, natural talent, heart, desire etc he is literally without equal but he was not super ellusive. At their best Pep, Whitaker, Benitez, Mayweather, Hopkins, Toney, Jones and Leonard were far harder to nail cleanly. The Robinson defence I would say is 7/10. Please wipe the "Sugar" out of your asses before kicking up a fuss on this one, just say what you see. People are too eager to support great old fighters like it's an insult to be critical of them.
He knew how to parry punches, which is more than plenty of guys these days. Had some head movement and short bursts of slickness here and there.
I also would rate his D 7/10. Recently I saw highlights of his fights at welter against Riccio and Flores, and he eaten some serious shots to the chin. But he took it without a blink and responded with combo blows 10 times harder.
Yeah I've seen him deflect assaults and protect target areas but I've also seen him in positions where that kind of defence didn't work and allsorts of stuff was getting through. What do you reckon out of 10?
That was a hallmark of his ring generalship. I'm talking about when he's under attack and needs to slip, avoid, block punches.
He doesn´t have much of head movement....but a solid 7/10 would be fair in my opinion.....He was good at parrying and rolling punches....
Ray Robinson at 147lbs was flawless in terms of hand speed and shot selection. Didn't throw a lot of expendable punches in his barrages. Unlike today's fighters. As far as defense he made excellent use of all the basic fundamentals and tools that lend to a great defensive fighter. Good head movement intertwined with his upper body movement. Great intelligent jab that was always provided great protection and incredible ring generalship. Ray always knew how to use the ring to his best advantage.
I would give him a 6 . He wasnt that hard to touch . Marty Servo managed to hit him with ease and rocked him pretty good a few times But Lucky for him , That chin of his was Iron .
6-7, decent slips and movement and a fundamentally sound stance but nothing particularly clever, and certainly not unhittable
