Patterson too was sometimes criticized for "going airborne" when he punched...in his younger days.

Robinson had it all: power, speed, accuracy, grace.... what a helluva fighter!

85-0 as an amateur. 131-1-1 after the St. Valentine's Day beat down. (lost to LaMotta in the early forties outweighed by 16 pounds and kicked his a r s e, a mere three weeks later! Drew with Basora and stopped him in the rematch)
Let any of the modern boys fight once a month for 11 frigging years and look at what their record would be.
After coming out of retirement, gave us some of the most awe-inspiring efforts we've ever seen as a MW (35-40 years old at the time-a LOT different than fighters now at that age-not to mention he was approaching 200 pro fights by then something most of the modern HOF'ers would run from). Ray is, quite simply, THE greatest fighter to EVER step into the ring.

Burt saw him in his prime at welter and considers him the perfect fighter which many others of that day did also. Our trainer was on an army boxing team with Ezzard Charles and wanted all of us to box like Ray, way easier said then done of course!

I never a fighter throwing punches so effortlessly, it's just natural for him, the goat.

I wish I could take credit for it but I just found it online and thought to share. The guy is really smart to catch certain things that Robinson does. I find it really tough to catch techniques from old fight films.

I really liked your articles on breaking down Tyson and Pacquiao and GGG though man, can't wait to catch the next one!

Can you imagine Sugar being born in, say, 1950-60-70? They would be carrying out HOF fighters on a stretcher after facing him. Absolutely NO debate in my (limited) mind.
