The 41-1 Robinson that fought Jake LaMotta the 3rd time vs. the 30-1 Leonard that beat Tommy Hearns. I think it would be an interesting fight, and as great as SRL was, I think I would favor SRR. I think Robinson would land the more eye catching punches but it would be a competitive fight and both fighters would be troubled by the others style especially early on. Leonard would have a hard time picking up on some of Robinsons sneaky and accurate left hooks and right hands, and Robinson would be somewhat troubled by Rays movement and speed early. Ultimately, I think SRR gains more and more momentum as the rounds go on and increasingly gets the better of most exchanges and wins a UD.
this is an even fight to me. i'll shade towards leonard in the matchup because i feel he beat slightly better competition at 147.
This would be a great bout while it lasts. As fast and talented as Leonard was, Robinson did everything better. One clear edge SRR has is damaging punching power, which would play a major role here. I think it's Robinson by one-sided UD at the very least.
Robinson. I made some lengthy ass post once before on why I've come to that opinion/conclusion. He's basically better for me.
The extra damage Robinson would inflict due to his power when both trade inside would give him the edge in the later rds & he would finish stronger for a close decision win IMO. Nobody has a decided edge from distance as both cancel each other out both tactically & technically & this is where the fight would be fought for the most part I think, SRR has the edge both midrange & inside tho & the fight would be fought enough there for it to make the difference.
Robinson didn't do too well against opponents who matched him for speed, think Galivan and Bell. Leonard would be the fastest opponent he ever faced so don't expect him to have an easy time. This would be a very close decision and the upset isn't quite as unlikely as some think
I think the comp isn't even close. Robinson fought the greater fighters by far up to then. He takes Leo. out inside 10. Hearns, w/ his lack of balance and shaky chin, gets out of there in 5. 1, if Robinson goes for it early.:ko:cheers:cheersdrink:good
Would be very close. I lean towards the ORIGINAL Sugarman,as he could do most things just that little better than Leonard.
I agree wholeheartedly. THIS Robinson WAS the greatest fighter pound for pound that EVER lived. GREATNESS EPITOMIZED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the ONLY one deserving the name Sugar Ray.:good
hard to say since there is little footage of Robbie. But I know that he was better tested than Leonard. seemed to be mentally tougher and could fight from one month to the next, something I doubt Leonard would be able to sustain. How do you get to be 110-1 in the 1940s without being the best? I think Leonard could survive but would become too intimidted by the legend to really get into it competitively. Leonard is "just not feeling it" this day and survives a lopsided points loss
