I almost died of shock upon opening this thread to see that rooster meant Leonards most impressive win, and not Robinsons. :bbb
Oh I dunno myself. I wasn't quite old enough to recall that one as it actually happened and form an opinion there and then, but in hindsight Hagler was visably shopworn, although Ray excecuted the perfect fightplan and won clearly enough IMO. Still a notable win you have to say.
I honestly think the most impressive SRL ever was was against Benitez. Benitez was a prodigy at the time, and SRL dominated him in a virtuoso performance. Hearns I was a greater win, but not as impressive IMO as I think Hearns had the measure of Leonard til the stoppage. Duran II was a greater win too, but Duran was clearly not in peak condition. Hagler was a greater win too, but I am still unsure whether Leonard actually won the fight, plus as we saw in the Mugabi fight, it was no longer prime Hagler. Despite what I have said, I think that these three were greater, but IMO Benitez was the most impressive.
I just got it Friday and I'm about 60 pages in. It's great so far. He says in the book that Leonard - Hearns was practically made in '78. Angelo Dundee was out of the country (he wouldn't have approved), then it fell through. So much more money was made 3 years later.
I acutally flipped on the radio last week and heard Kimball on a talk radio interview, then went and got it at Barnes and Noble and read it inside of 2 days. You can really tell the difference when a book is written by an insider like him and when it's written by a civilian/non boxing historian. He has a command of the facts and details. Although he gives Duran short shrift. Which annoyed me.
I watch it quite often and find it to be all its cracked up to be. I am a pretty big Leonard fan though.....
No-one was picking Ray going in, and talk was on what Leonard had to overcome, not the hindsight driven talk of Hagler being worn etc. Leonard had next to zero fanfare.
Hearns 1 to come back from behind against such a quality opponent takes a special fighter. p.s Sugar Ray = Ray Robinson
The win over Hagler is certainly the most impressive considering the circumstances, but he was physically less impressive in that one than in the earlier fights against Hearns and Duran.
