Get checked out at a specialist running shop - it's worth it. The way your foot lands, your foot shape, your stride and a whole lot of other things affect the type of shoe you need. If you're going to be doing general training (anything other than running) in them you probably need a fairly high-mileage type shoe, not a lightweight trainer or a racing shoe, as they won't be sturdy enough. Don't listen to physios or podiatrists who tell you almost automatically that if your foot rolls in you need the biggest, heaviest, most supportive shoe on the market.

The better brands include Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, Adidas. Nike also make a couple of good shoes but they're pretty specialised.

At the moment I rotate a pair of Adidas Adistar and a pair of Asics Kayano.
