"There is a monopoly that threatens boxing in the United States boxing. The monopoly is headed by Oscar De La Hoya and HBO. HBO has chosen Golden Boy as their promoter and that is creating a monopoly and we are ready to do anything [to fight it], even going to the government. This deal harms the fighters,"

Sulaiman further alleges that fighters will drop their promoters in order to join up with GBP, and enjoy the HBO exposure that comes with being a GBP fighter. In the end, the sanctioning bodies stand to lose the most from this. Anyone who has been watching HBO lately has noticed that HBO has become increasingly dismissive of the sanctioning bodies. Last week when talking about Cintron Kellerman made the following remark, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Cintron is now the mandatroy for one of these sanctioning bodies". Now Kellerman knew damn well the WBC was the org in question and he made his statement with a sarcastic tone. The HBO agenda seems clear; diminish the orgs as much as possible while promoting the Ring Belt(which is owned by Golden Boy) as the one true belt.

Sulaiman is right, Golden Boy is creating a monopoly and attempting to drastically change the landscape of the sport. Eventually, fighters won't care about these org belts and will simply follow the HBO gold. The structure of the sport will resemble that of the UFC. There will only be one belt per division(the Ring Belt), and there will be a centralized matchmaker that ultimately decides whom everyone fights.

Take Mayweather for example. Despite rumors to the contrary, he did not sign a 5 fight deal with GBP. However, he still needs them to make money. As a result, he'll have to basically fight who GBP wants him to fight. He will get screwed over in terms of dates, and HBO won't put up the money he wants if he doesn't play ball with GBP. If GBP wants Mayweather/Pac next, it will happen. If they want Mayweather/Mosley, that will happen as well. Mayweather still has some control over his career. However, he can't make the money he's used to without HBO, and he can't garner HBO's full support without GBP.

The sanctioning bodies will not stand for this. They will do everything in their power to keep themselves relevant. However, they'll be hard pressed to derail the GBP express which seems determined to structure the sport in the way that the fans and the critics want it to look.

A monopoly on boxing is the greatest thing that could happen to the sport.

Is that the same president of the WBC who got sued and lost $30mill because he wanted his belt in the hands of Roy instead of some no name Euro so he outright stole the belt away from the rightfull winner of it?

A corrupt person calling somebody else out hmm.

I tend to agree. I don't see anything wrong with the sport being run more like the UFC. By the way, Ring editor Nigel Collins recently wrote an article trying to debunk allegations of bias towards GBP. It's worth checking out, because there are some pretty good factual points he brings up.

I agree. Then the best would be fighting the best.

That is why the UFC became so big so quick.

I hope we see more and more articles from those with a vested interest in the survival of the alphabet sanctioning bodies decrying the current state of affairs. It gives me hope.

He's mad because none of the mega fights that are already made or will be made in the future not involve the wbc. So he cant make any money off these mega fights. Bitter, GBP are giving the fans mega fights, sanctioning bodies are ****ing up the game.

    [edit] Near Demise

In early 1998, Roy Jones, Jr. announced that he was relinquishing his WBC world Light Heavyweight Championship. In response, the organization ordered a bout between German contender Graciano Rocchigiani and former champion Michael Nunn to fill the vacancy, sanctioning it as a world championship match.

On March 21, 1998 Rocchigiani won the fight and a WBC belt; in the subsequent WBC rankings, he was listed as “Light-Heavyweight World Champion." Jones, however, had a change of heart and asked if the WBC would reinstate him as the champion. In a move that violated nearly a dozen of its own regulations, the WBC granted the reinstatement. Rocchigiani received a letter from the WBC advising that the publishing of his name as champion was a typographical error, and he had never really been the official titleholder.

Rocchigiani immediately filed a lawsuit against the WBC in a U.S. federal court, claiming that the organization's actions both were contrary to their own rules and injurious to his earning potential (due to diminished professional stature). On May 7, 2003, the judge ruled in Rocchigiani's favor, awarding him $30 million (U.S.) in damages and reinstating him as a former WBC Champion (Rocchigiani had lost a bout since his WBC Title match).

The following day, the WBC sought protection by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (i.e., corporate debt restructuring) in Puerto Rico. The organization then spent the next 13 months attempting to negotiate a six-figure settlement with Rocchigiani, but Rocchigiani did not at first accept.

On June 11, 2004, the WBC announced it would enter Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation (i.e., business closing and total asset sell-off) proceedings, effectively ending its existence. This action prompted some in the boxing community to plead with Rocchigiani to settle the dispute, which he did in mid-July 2004.
