This one is a little off topic, but interesting none the less. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9903E0DE1131E733A2575BC1A9659C946897D6CF Did anyone else no that Gentleman Jim Corbett issued formal challenges to both Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries, in 1909. You would imagine he would be well past it by this time, but it is interesting that Corbett would want to fight Johnson, and be prepared to do so.
And more on the Corbett thing. Johnson actually agreed to take the fight, if Jeffries did not accept a title match. Very interesting. I wonder how this fight would have affected everybodies overall ATG rankings, particularly if Corbett won the fight (unlikely i know). http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9407E3DC1131E733A2575AC2A9659C946897D6CF
Here is another sparring story. It seems from what i have read that Armstrong was easily handled by jeffries in sparring, although this particular occassion, Armstrong does look to have caused some problems. I know these things are just sparring but i still find little things like this quite interesting. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=940CE2DA173AE733A25755C1A9629C946196D6CF Handball used to be a big thing. Here is more info on the Jeffries Corbett handball feud. I bet Corbett beats Wlad Klitchsko at handball too, despite all the modern advantages! http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9403E0D91530E233A25752C0A9609C946196D6CF And here is some more training stories, this time Bob Fitzsimmons, who comments on their exhibition series. It seems that Fitzy would cut jeffries to bits in their exhibition fights and it is what forced Jeffries to abandon the crouch defence. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9C04E0DD1230E233A25752C0A9619C946196D6CF
PROOF POSITIVE JOHNSON WAS DUCKING THE WHITE MAN! Surely, his legacy must be diminished. After all, Corbett issued a challenge!
This is really funny watching you spin and squirm ,after all the hay you tried to make about hard hitting Smith putting Johnson through the ropes ,now we have Jeffries put into a "trance" by light hitting Corbett ,and floored twice. You treat newspaper cuttings as gospel when they are favourable to your argument ,now we find one with detail that reflects adversely on the durability of Jeffries chin ,and suddenly it becomes questionable? "AS YOU SOW ,SO SHALL YOU REAP". You have been hoist with your own petard , " pay up and look big" I look forward to threads that start. " If light punching Corbett could drop, and put Jeffries into a trance what would big punching super heavyweights do to him?"atsch
I have seen that one before. Corbett's detail of the older fighters before and after his time is excellent. So Corbett, Sullivan, Fitzsimmons, Burns, Johnson, Langford, and Dempsey all said Jeffries was the best of their time. Never heard much from Hart.
Actually, I somewhat misunderstood the quote .... the book that's quoted is from the early 1930's; but the Donovan quote apparantly dates from the time of Jeffries reign. Sorry I got confused.
He certainly through down the challenge, judging by this, and it seems he would also have been the favourite. It is actually amazing, just how high esteem Corbett was held. Langfords comments are interestin also. http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...------en-Logical-20--1----johnson+corbett-all--- And It seems he did more than issue the challenge, he actually got a committment for the fight! Johnson definitely ducked him:yep http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...------en-Logical-20--1----johnson+corbett-all---
Some more info, Corbett and Jeffries actually seemed to agree corbett would get first shot, since Jeffries was in no condition to fight. http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...---en-Logical-20--1----johnson+corbett-all--- oops, sadly, it seems like it was Corbett who did the ducking. Bit of a shame really, a 6 rnd Johnson Corbett fight would ahve been good. http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...ical-20--81-byDA---johnson+corbett-all---1909
This big 6 7 275 lb modern superheavy threw down th challenge to Jeffries too. No wonder he retired. http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...en-Logical-20--1----jeffries+athletics-all---
Back to the original topic, i think this is the original article which refers to Jeffries being 20-0 in 1896 (cant remember if it has been posted or not). http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...n-Logical-20--21----jeffries+athletics-all---
