Light heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera (20-1, 14 KOs) was hoping to land a big fight in the fall.

He was presented with the opportunity to face former unified champion Sergey Kovalev in the main event of an HBO televised card on November 25 from the Theatre in New York's Madison Square Garden. Barrera had been gunning for the opportunity to face Kovalev since last year.

Barrera and Kovalev are promotional stablemates under New Jersey based Main Events.

According to Barrera, the terms for the fight were underwhelming.

While Barrera was not overwhelmed by the financial package to face Kovalev, he was willing to take the contest if a guarantee was extended for a much bigger payday in his next fight - provided he beat Kovalev.

When Barrera was unable to secure that guarantee, he walked away from the fight.

Kovalev, who was last seen in the ring in June when he was stopped by Andre Ward, will now face Vyacheslav Shabranskyy. Barrera bounced back from his first career defeat at the hands of Ward by knocking Shabranskyy out last year. He also stopped Paul Parker and dominated Joe Smith a few months back.

“I was offered the fight with Kovalev, but it wasn’t for a title. They offered me no money—they said $300,000 first, but I said, ‘I’ll take the fight, but if I win you need to guarantee me another fight for more money.’ They weren’t interested in this. So I said, ‘No title, no money—I’d better wait for a title fight, because I know I’m next in the rankings for a title,'" Barrera told xxxxx news

I took Shabranskyy [in December 2016] for no money. I took Smith Jr. [in July 2017] for no money. I think I showed people with those wins that I’m a good boxer. I just want to be paid fairly. Boxing is my job.”

That isn't a good offer, he is right to wait it out, that is if he is telling the truth.

I like Barrera, I picked him to beat Smith Jr, but a win over Kovalev wouldn't guarantee you a title shot anyway ? A win over Kova and hes the top dog at 175. Seems odd to refuse it. 300K isnt good money for a guy that holds no belts ?

Lets not forget that he refused to fight Beterbiev in an title eliminator fight.

So if he beat limited Smith Jr he now deserves 1M $$$ fights ?

Do you think Kovalev is getting a lot more than 300K for a fight agaisnt Barrera lol ?

Do not use a strawman argument to make a point. I never said Berrera deserves a 1million payday but pay him something and give him some incentive to step in the ring.

300k to get brain damaged isn't worth it.

300k is a lot of money for a LHW that nobody knows about

Not surprised. If it makes him feel any better, Kovalev was probably offered a Neo Geo for the fight with the promise of 2 games if he won. There's no money in that stable- they have to rely on the other camp to bring in $$$.

Sullivan and Kovalev would be better off jumping ship.

It's a lot of money but no amount of money can reverse brain damage.

I quite agree with Barrera not agreeing to fight for 300k but however other fighters at LHW wont get him a million payday either.Against Ward i think Barrera got suprisingly 500k.Stevenson wont fight a live body, who else will give Barrera payday-Jack,Bivol soon champ,Beterbiev soon champ ?? Nobody.Gvozdyk-Nope.Alvarez-nope.Cant think of anyone at 175 really.

There are many good fighters at 175 but mostly eastern europeans and they arent a draw in the US,Stevenson is known in Canada but he wont take risks,so its quite sad...good fighters, knockout artists, exciting fighters but no money.May be Kovalev selling his titles to Ward for couple of millions and getting robbed twice isnt so bad,i mean he could of lost to Beterbiev for free instead,i dont know really.

Duva is robbing these dudes like crazy. I can't believe his purse for the beterbiev fight would have been 60k. I don't understand what Barerra was thinking signing with her.

That's probably like 3 or 4x what Kovalev made for the Ward rematch.

He's not dumb but very carefull who he gets in a ring with, because at his age, one loss would mean the end of his career.

Why wouldn't he want to take the 300K , beat Kova and move from there?

He dont want that work. Same as it was with Beterbiev
