It could go either way, but as usual I'm riding with Joe. Barrera is chinny and isn't hard to land overhands on, which doesn't bode well for him in this match. Joe skillwise is around the same level as Shabranskyy, but clearly hits way harder, which will probably spell doom for Sully.
I will go with Barerra by decision. Old Hopkins was hitting Joe Smith with too many clean shots for my liking. A younger Hopkins would've killed Joe Smith being able to land a right hand at will. Barrera is younger and fresher. Bad matchmaking by Joe Smith Jr. It would've been better to get knocked out by Stevenson for belt money. Non title fight means small money.
tough call. barrera proved his toughness against shabransky. smith has beaten two high level guys in his last two fights. i am definitely excited to see it. not confident enough of either guy to make a prediction.
I feel a little guilty for picking against Smith every time out. I respect him and i know I've sold him short before...but sure enough, I'm backing Sullivan here. Great fight. If Smith pulls this off, he's a legit world caliber contender.
Smith's defence is way too porous for my liking and Barrera has the skills, savvy and punch to make him pay for it. But Smith can bang hard with both hands so Barrera will have to be mindful of that. Not sure about Smith's chin yet. To be fair to him, AFAIA, he hasn't been off his feet yet and he's not difficult to tag so I don't think it's glass. And we can't question his heart, because in his only loss he suffered a badly broken jaw and fought through the pain until it became too much to bear. If he does have a good chin or tightens up his defence things could get very interesting.
They both look about as crude as each other to be fair. If they both go at each other like they usually go at their opponents and Smith's chin is solid, I can easily envisage seeing him catching Barrera and taking him out. This content is protected This content is protected
Barrera's has a better pedigree than Smith both guys could bang I see Barrera more tested he was the one who called out Smith.
Barrera is pretty chinny. He might have his moments early in the fight but I think Joe catches him and puts him to sleep.
Barrera is the better technician and he's more polished, but that's to be expected because he had a much more extensive amateur career (285 fights) and he came up through the Cuban system whereas Smith Jr. only had about 50 and up until very recently he's been working full time as a construction worker squeezing in training after doing an 8 hour shift at work. That said, Barrera, like Smith, still looks crude when he's attacking. Barrera can punch but he doesn't carry the kind of power Smith does.
Both are big light heavies so you think Joe could take a right hand from Barrera will see my advise don't go to the fridge.
