I saw Rocky vs. Jeffries (on the forum) a few days back and it got me thinking of how a potential Sullivan-Rocky matchup can go. Who wins?
I broke into area 51 and, after burning the footage of Greb out of spite of the forum, I saw Jeffries KO Rocky in 5 rounds!
If one is brought by time-machine from their day into their opponents, I'd strongly favor Marciano, though there's a outside chance Sullivan's power and fast hands could figure first. If 'a Sullivan' had come along in Marciano's day, or 'a Marciano' came along in Sullivan's day -- those are very hard calls.
I'd pick Marciano in a boxing match, Sullivan in a beer drinking contest, and Marciano in a spaghetti eating contest.
We do not really know what we are going to see from a prime John L. Sullivan, but, from what I do know, I will go with Rocky Marciano to win a tough fight, with John L. Sullivan looking better than many expected him to.
Agree. We lack complete info on John L - and perhaps there are more positives to his game we don’t know about - perhaps some negatives too. Based on what we do know, I personally would favour Rocky - KO/stoppage at the 2/3 mark of a 15 rounder. I wouldn’t discount Marciano’s chances in a bar fight either - we saw what Rocky was prepared to employ effectively in the ring - head, elbows, late punches, etc. In a bar fight - - no false pretences, only to break those rules anyway, bar fight: carte blanche, anything goes. Compared to what we saw in the ring, Rocky would have that many more non MOQ tricks to pull out of his his kit bag.
I would suggest that each would win if they were fighting in their respective eras. In a bar room fight i say Sullivan would prevail, that was more Sullivans original type of combat.
Rocky walks over to Sullivan. “You calling me a son of a *****”? Sullivan says “What I said was I’ll beat any son of a ***** in this house”. Rocky decks Sullivan with one punch. If not one he punches the absolute crap out of him at the bar. In the ring Sullivan wouldn’t even get licensed in Marciano’s day. I John L’s day see above account at saloon bar.
Let's be serious for a moment. Rocky was famous for training his ass off and displaying exceptional stamina and grit. Sullivan was famous for eating and drinking and losing to Corbett. Apologies to any Corbett fans out there but Corbett looks plain bad on film. I'd bet the house on Marciano flattening this guy. Marciano was from another league.
If only you had typed “Surely we can be serious for a moment?”. I had a fresh, innovative reply for that, ready in my back pocket. Ah well.
