The comments comparing Slade with other opponents was interesting (By john l at the end). http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cg...-------100--1-byDA---0herbert+slade+fight-all This Reporter didnt seem to give Slade much of a chance against Mitchell. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cg...-------100--1-byDA---0herbert+slade+fight-all And this NZ Report (although it does admittedly seem to use Fitz' comments as the source of the results of the fight) has Jem Mace calling the fight after the third round. It also appears to indicate a debut in 1880 so i can see why some might be wary of relying on it. http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cg...-------100--1-byDA---0jem+mace+tournament-all
Oh Slade was definitely a manufactured fighter. He might have matured into a fairly servicable heavyweight as a result of his sparring with Sullivan on tour, after their fight.
A fellow called Jack Brady beat Slade out west, also Robinson probably did the trick. The difficulty i have with the period is that really small fighters ie McCaffrey, Mitchell did really well on a few occasions with the top boys but didnt engage in eneough decision contests to guage their true worth. Joe McAuliffe was the ultimate gatekeeper, top men like Jackson, Goddard, Slavin, Maher and Choynski beat him but that was it. BTW despite the small guys fellows such as Sullivan, Corbett, Jackson, Slade, Slavin, McAuliffe, Killeen were all either over six foot or 200+ pounds.
That certainly is something which would make sense. But I have only really seen the Slade story talked about, after Fitz became successful in the US. Here it is discussed by Fitz direct from the mouth, at a benefit, at a time, where to be honest a victory over Slade would mean pretty much zero to his credibility. http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15085617?searchTerm=herbert+slade+boxing+fitzsimmons
This was in 1909 when the myth was well perpetuated. I recently came across a report of an amature tournament which was part of a Mace-Herbert Slade exhibition in I think Timaru, and Slades younger brother was taking part. Sounds awful like Fitz's tourney. I didnt get the results.
Here is a pretty interesting article about George Godfrey's solid win over Denver Ed Smith. There is also a few other interesting bits, including a bit of a description of Jackson Goddard. http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/SportingLife/1890/VOL_16_NO_09/SL1609008.pdf
Here is a very in depth fight report of Godfrey v Jackson. Jackson sounds very modern from the report, working in behind a straight left jab. Godfrey does sound very tough, but i think he was outclassed here, by the sounds. I think he may have been a too small with not enough power to beat say, a John L Sullivan, but he was the best coloured fighter until Peter Jackson came along.
He was definitely a tough fighter. Here is godfrey v Kilrain. Outclassed again, by the bigger man (by the sounds of things) but game until the very end. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l...ords=Sullivan+fight+Fighting+fighting+Godfrey
And While we are on Godfrey, here is the exchange that happened between he and Sullivan, where he declined the invitation to spar Sullivan. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l...ting+fight+SULLIVAN+SULLIVAN-'S+FIGHT+Godfrey
No point in not posting the links to some of these articles i am reading at the moment. Here is a description of the fight between big 200lb plus Paddy Ryan and Illinois Middleweight champion (both John L victims). Neither really seemed to gain an advantage in the three rounds. http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/l...Sullivan+James+DALTON+sparring+Dalton+Captain
Honestly, I look at Paddy Ryan and think I could whip his ass pretty easily. I am sure I am not alone in this thought.
Dont forget with modern methods Paddy Ryan could shave the top of his head bald, maybe he would look a better fighter then? He is 6 foot plus and 200 plus pounds, that is decent size even today. What is it that makes you think you could take him, surely you dont think his jab is defective based on film footage?
****, bro, I'm 5-11, 215, can bench press a house, and took 10 years of real boxing training and won my own share of street fights. Granted I'm an old fart but I've traded a lot of punches and that paunchy dude would not in the least scare me. i meet a dozen guys a week I would rather less fight. Just saying.
This content is protected Really? I'm not too much a believer in the "eye test" but I certainly know that barring any unfortunate incident I will look better than that when I am 60.
And you acuse us of being delusional? Pady Ryan was one of the weakest champions of all time but he could probably still beat some curent champions in an LPR fight or a street fight. Personaly I wouldnt give Bernard Hopkins a chance against sombody like Tom Sayers or Jem Mace in a streetfight.
