Americans dominated the heavyweight division for all of its history. What is the difference right now? Where are they?

"It's all about hunger and desire. There was once a good deal of great champions, because they were hungry and they really wanted to work hard and to give it all for the titles. It’s quite different now. Americans have become lazy. They don’t want to try hard for a not so big amount of money. We Russians are much, much hungrier. That’s the difference."

Ibragimov has good points here. And please do not post the NFL / NBA excuse. Those leagues have been around for ever.

We also need stronger amateur programs. I agree regarding the Olympics.

But most importantly I believe we need fitter kids. Obesity is causing American kids to be heavy but not fit. To excel at Boxing fitness is key. Maskaev recently stated that most Russian fighters do roadwork year round, not just when they have fights.

Iggy's basically right. American HWs are getting fat contracts in the NFL and NBA - why would they want to get punched in the face?

I disagree with Iggy. Americans are no more lazy than any other nation. Its just that as capitalist, we go for the best way to make money. Football players in the 60s and 70s made less than HW champs, so a lot of those NBAers and NFLers would go to boxing, you could make more money. Now you have 2nd string NFLers and NBAers making MILLIONS, compare that to making MAYBE $10K in a nationally televised fight on ESPN and you have an atmoshpere where most athletic Americans "potential boxers" are going to pass on the sport, because financially its doesn't pay enough for the damage you go through, not to mention the general feeling of boxing being totally corrupt.

The population of the United States is above 300 million and expected to rise - there are gang fights everyday in Projects from San Francisco, Cali to KC, Missouri and from there to Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and NYC - and all these guys get punched on the street for free... Of course, ex-Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik (Советский Союз) was something like 283 million in 1987 and above the USA population back then, so they have the human resources but they can't afford to export em all to where the money is... So how come there are so many great Eastern Prize Fighters in the West to win all heavyweight titles? Sure they have the discipline, they are very well-schooled boxers and they have the genetics... But they are also easily maneuvered by the mobster agents to the West and people only care while they keep on winning... Eastern promises.

8. The Russians and Euro's are a welcome relief, from the American's, who insist on trashtalking, and all of the ghetto bling, and the thuggish, gangster image:-( The Euro's and Russians have a better concept of respect and sportsmanship..
Soviet Bloc fighter's may they keep kicking ass and taking names!!:yep

to be honest if you look at him he isnt fat.

if he stood next to another top level thlete they would look fairly similar.

it's hard to look in shape when you got guys like cunningham and holyfield on your case.

Amateur programs are the key.

There simply aren't enough places/programs to get young people into the sport.

If you don't have a way to encourage participation, of course you will not have as big a pool of talented fighters.

That is what is happening in the U.S.

If you bring back the facilities, you would bring the kids back from the basketball courts and football fields that maybe would have boxed 20 or 30 years ago.

Wrong. From the late 1960s Sports Illustrated and other publications have stated that potential Amercan heavyweights are going into NFL / NBA. The pay in general in those leagues has been good since the 1970s.

Yeah but Iggy beat Holyfield and would easily KO cunningham. It is a boxing match, not a bodybuiling contest. Fighters like Iggy train to be in fighting shape.

If you were an athlete would you chose the NFL and big money or would you chose boxing and a Chinaman's wages? Only 1% of boxers make as much or money that the lowest paid football players. The real athletes go into professional sports other than boxing because they can make more money. Boxing gets what is left, the dregs. That is why the heavyweight division is full of bums.
