Hugo Corro beat a shopworn Rodrigo Valdes, who had gone 24 brutal rounds with Carlos Monzon in 1976 and 1977. He then went 15 more with Bennie Briscoe on Nov 5 1977, to gain the vacant belt. Hugo Corro defeated Rodrigo Valdes on April 22 1978, in San Remo, Italy for the World Middleweight Title. He then defended his title against Ronnie Harris, on Aug 5 1978, in Buenos, Aires, Argentina by unanimous 15 round decision. He then repeated his previous performance against Valdes by scoring a unanimous 15 round decision verdict on Nov 11 1978, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Corro then lost his title to Vito Antuofermo in Monte Carlo, Monaco, on June 30 1979, by a split decision. Sumbu Kalambay, quicker and mobile would outbox Hugo to win by unanimous decision.
