Great match up. Sumbu to box his ears off and Jackson to get desperate swing for the fences and walk into something from Sumbu that finishes him in round 10. I would not bet on this fight because Jackson only needs 1 punch to land the right way to win.
If this is before Jackson was basically blinded by a detached retina, I favor him to win by come-from-behind KO … but Sumbu is slick enough that maybe he never quite walks into the trap. But anyone KO’d in one by Nunn is apt to get caught at some point.
Sumbu nine times out of the . Completely outclass Jackson and take him apart . Only a bomber Graham stile sucker punch would have bailed him out.
Kalambay completely shuts down Julian Jackson and outboxes him to a lopsided decision, just as long as he doesn't get careless and caught. Jackson has a serious puncher's chance though and can be a good counterpuncher himself.
This is one of the few guys I think could actually in his prime stand up to Julian Jackson's power. And he had the style to put it on Jackson and make him very uncomfortable. Other than Michael Nunn (which was as far beyond the realm of what would be expected) Kalambay was never blown out, Kalambay "outfought" Mike Mccallum. He was a real problem. Gun to my head I'd say Kalambay UD12 in a competitive fight.
The Kalambay who outboxed Barkley and beat 38-0 Herol Graham (in his backyard) and also undefeated McCallum in 3 straight fights would be favoured on points. Has to be one of the best runs that I can remember especially when you considered that Barkley would win 3 World title and ko a former heavyweight champion. To be honest I wouldn´t be surprised if he busts up Jackson late to force a stoppage.
The thing that people forget or overlook is Nunn was a 6'2 southpaw and Sumbu basically walked right into a lefthand thrown with leverage from a taller boxer. And due to his speed and timing Nunn at times could crack with power as was seen in the Tate and Parker bouts in which he iced Parker with one shot and Parker was known for a great chin. Nunn of course cannot be compared to Jackson in terms of power but he is much taller and way faster and fights from a different stance.
Kalambay should win a UD. But he must be focused the entirety of the fight especially rds 1-8. One slip up and goodnight Sumbu .
I think all of Jackson’s career at 160 was after he had retina issues. He’d have his hands full and probably lose with two good eyes anyway.
While I do think Sumbu had a problem with southpaws, this doesn’t mean only a 6-2 southpaw could hit him solid … and if JJ hits him solid there’s a better than even chance Kalambay ends up like pretty much everyone else he hit solid. And Sumbu was down at least three other times in his career outside of the Nunn fight, so it’s not like he was packing granite in his mandible. Another interesting factor is that i learned from a video (pretty sure posted on this forum) that analyzed Jackson’s KOs and one of the things pointed out is he actually often did wing haymakers from a reversed stance when at closer or mid range … that what appears to be an orthodox blow was actually a southpaw punch you look at his feet relative to where his opponent was. More he was kind of even-footed but off to the side a bit so the trajectory was as if it was a southpaw punch.
7 or 8 times out of 10, Kalambay wide UD or late stoppage. 2 or 3 times out of 10, Jackson KO while well behind on PTS.
That´s a very good point. If my memory serves me right a faded Jackson took out Agostino Cardamone doing just that.
The point was that Nunn is 6'2 and Sumbu had to find a way to get inside on a taller boxer with a longer reach and of course Jackson lands it could very well be lights out for Sumbu.
