I penned a quick piece basically summarizing everything from the 9 surveys. FIRST & FOREMOST - THANK YOU ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE SURVEYS! Especially those of you who participated in all 9! :cheers I didn't write much in terms of unique commentary, just wanted to get the lists all in one place. http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news.php?p=29721&more=1 I'd be curious to hear feedback on the over all series of surveys and the quality of the results the collective input produced. Thanks again everyone!!
Also general observation: Robinson was in the top 5 in 2 weight classes. Armstrong was top 5 in 3. Reflections on that fact on its face and the fact that Robinson is usually rated higher?
I'm going to have a look through it all properly later on Rum, but just about this. You could also argue that Armstrong flat out has the better resume. Better p4p achievement, as indicated by these surveys, arguably a better resume should equal a higher ranking. Most people pay lip service to Armstrong being above Robinson as "reasonable" but few actually do it, me included, though I have them only one place apart. I think skill is the deciding factor for a lot of people, as in Robinson is more skilled. In fact, Armstrong is one of the few performers i'd say are just as, or nearly as special on film. Food for thought for sure.
Great input, McGrain. There is a lot to think about. At some point, I may try and use this to make some kind of a case about something (about what, I have no idea). I'm a dork when it comes to statistics, and I think the survey presents a lot of interesting food for thought on numerous fronts. On a side-note, I'm considering having a different type of survey. Perhaps something along the lines of the 25 most historically most significant boxing match-ups. Or maybe something completely different. But I like the idea of surveys with collective input from the Classic section. A lot of pretty knowledgeable guys in here. I personally think the lists portray exactly what I was aiming for.
When I get the time I think I'll actually come up with a way to analyze the numbers a bit more closely and I'll make a variety of "categories" that help distinguish some from the rest. I have some ideas about how to go about that, which i think could be interesting.
If you go for this one I think it is worth keeping the number low...maybe ten, maybe fewer. The problem with fewer is you know 3 of the fights you are getting... The problem with 25 is you would end up with loads of = places and a lot of soft answers.
Excellent! I really didn't know you were doing this, as I might have been too busy with running all the Amateur Shows in New Jersey, the NJ Boxing HOF and the NJ Diamond Gloves, that I never got around to seeing this. Again, you did an excellent job!
First, great job, man. ead it before on the main page. And yeah, loads of food fo thought. There are a few guys I have barely Top15/20 that are in the Top10 in some of those lists, Jack Dempsey fo example. And know I´ve got to ask my the question if I am so far off or if those people are just too nostalgic. Interesting statistic: Guys in two weight-divisions´ Top10: Harry Geb Bob Fitzsimmons Sugar Ray Robinson Mickey Walker Henry Armstrong Guys in two weight division´s Top5: Sugar Ray Robinson Henry Armstrong Henry Armstong is the only one ranked in three divisions and Top5 in each. That is amazing. And solidifys my opinion of him beeing No. 1 p4p. Also interesting that Sam Langford is only ranked in one division in the Top10 and even there not Top5. The only one of my Top5 p4p that is only ranked in one weightclass. And Ezzard Charles is the only other one of my Top7 p4p. Seems I´m not that far of with those at least.
I came onto the board too late to take part in the surveys, but my reaction is that the results were utterly superb. General surveys such as this seem to produce much better results than any individual "expert" opinion. The only "flaw" in the voting, IMHO, was that Fitzsimmons didn't do better at lightheavy or middle, but he did end up 8th in p4p. I would have rated him higher as a triple champion. Anyway, excellent job to you and your voters.
