Some rarely seen footage of the power punching Korean wildman shortly before turning pro. Something else you rarely see in the amateur ranks with headgear, a vicious one punch knockout.

Really shows you what concrete fists Moon must have possessed, and was one of his defining traits that allowed him to become a champion in two separate divisions. It certainly wasn't won because of his technique and finesse. He makes modern "crude" fighters like the power punch oriented Srisaket Sor Rungvisai look technical in comparison.

My next door neighbour at the time John Hyland had the misfortune of fighting Moon at the 84 Olympics.

That is indeed an absolutely terrible card for an amateur fighter to draw.

Did you ever talk to him about the fight or glean any information from him about it?

No I never spoke to him about it even though I was at his welcome home party. It was just bad luck he got Moon in his first fight. John was a very accomplished amateur in Britain but Moon just chewed him up, I watched it on tv. Sun Kil also put the American Robert Shannon out if memory serves me right.

Because I was familiar with Moon I followed his career as a pro and a lot of his title fights did pop up on British tv. Have you ever watched the second Khaokor Galaxy fight? I recommend it, it's a masterclass by Galaxy, the lesser known of the brothers.

Moon was notorious for brutal finishes as an amateur, it preceded him into the professional ranks. He knocked Thai Wanchai Pongsri out in the 82 Asian games with one punch to win gold. He stopped all there of his opponents in the 85 Boxing World Cup. In 85 he stopped future professional world champion Paul Banke in round three of their amateur bouts.

He was a wrecking ball, and even though he had a short professional career he was more or less a full pro as an amateur, seemingly already having developed the same style, power and techniques he would show as a professional fighter.

No, I've never watched either one to be honest with you. What makes it such a striking performance by Gakaxy?

I made this thread because I've taken a real interest in Moon and his career as of late and finally got around to watching the amateur footage of him that I've had forever.

Moon beat him in their first fight on a technical decision I think cut eye. What made the second Galaxy fight so striking for me was because how highly I rated Moon. I didn't see the Galaxy fight back in the day it was only about 7 or 8 years ago but it was how good Galaxy looked against him that really surprised me. It's on youtube, watch it if you get a chance.

It was at a time when I was rewatching a lot of Moon when I watched this.

What do you think made the difference the second time around between the two?

Do you think size had anything to do with it? Both Galaxy brothers were supposedly notorious weight drainers and Moon was a fighter who would move down in weight as his career progressed.

I think the first time the fight ended prematurely so nothing was really answered. It is funny you should mention the weight because Galaxy in his next fight quite bizarrely collapsed against Luisito Espinoza. It's almost impossible to see what caused it. To me it looked like he just passed out and doing the weight could of been a factor.

Grand thread Russ and good replies too. Top footage, I've only read about Moon's amateur days and haven't really watched before. Just his pro fights.
He was a testament to the idea that great power, a flint jaw and just marching in angrily throwing crushing bombs works. Just an insanely hard man with wet sandbags for fists, like a very nasty windup toy with one setting. He could really cut off the ring though and had very underrated offensive timing and rhythm for me, though he was really easy to hit. And he was quite an accurate puncher despite the wild, looping technique he had.

Remember reading a few years back that he spent too long in the amateurs and wasted a good chunk of his physical prime there without really improving once he'd reached a certain point around the 82 Asian Games; not the most beneficial approach when power, stamina and toughness are your main assets (nor when you get hit a lot). Apparently the Korean amateur scene was very deep around that time and Moon shipped a lot of punishment despite his success, refusing several good offers to turn pro sooner.

I'm not sure if it's right but the word was a few years back that he suffers from really serious brain damage these days, which is awful if true.

The Espinoza thing is outright odd, yeah. Khaokor basically just flops over....

That's very sad news if it's true.

I've heard it a few times on here I think. There used to be a fella called Confucius who was really knowledgeable about Asian boxing and especially Korean boxing. I'm sure he mentioned Moon being in a really bad way a couple of times. Really sad, we all know what a brutal sport it can be.
