Moon made Robert Shannon the only fighter of the USA team that year that didn't won a medal.
It was a great fight, both men were down and hurt.

Thanks tin, I appreciate the compliment and was eagerly waiting for your reply here. They're always quality, just like this one.

I too have read he spent too much time, life too much of himself in the amateur system. I was unaware of the deepness of the amateur scene at the time however, that's very interesting.

Can you think of any fighters that fought the way Moon did, or was he truly one of a kind in regards to how much abuse he would ship for a world champion level fighter?

As for Moon being a shell of himself, I do remember there being murumurings but I also remember a poster having a very sharp rebuke for that saying Moon was actually doing just fine.

Lower weight class boxing from 30 years ago is the definition of a niche interesting in something, so finder concrete information one way or the other is almost impossible. Maybe if I spoke Korean, or knew someone who did.

Terrific thread Russell!!!! Moon is one of my all time favs, he was a true badass. I hope that one day he gets inducted into the Hall Of Fame and join Yuh and Chang who alongside him form the holly trinity of korean boxing. As of rumours of him not being well i have heard them for at least a decade but as far as i know hes doing fine, heres a video of him from some years ago. For a guy who fought the way he did he looks pretty good IMO.

Wow, fancy seeing you here bladerunner! How have you been? Ever catch these amateur fights before?

I'm just getting into Korean boxing, I'm a big fan of Moon and Chong-Pal Park, the destructive body snatcher who was one of the original champions of the 168 pound weight division, a division that has caught on fire with fans but still has an obscure history that not many know anything about.

Thanks mate, likewise I keep an eye out for your threads and posts, I really respect your opinion.

The Koreans had guys at the time like Kwang Sun Kim who went to fight Carbajal and Chiquita for the world title, Shin Joon Sup who I think beat Virgil Hill for the 84 Olympics middleweight gold, and Heo Yong Mo who beat Fenech in the amateurs. Real purple patch for them.

I'm trying to think of other fighters like Moon who were all huge punch and punch absorption at the highest level and of similar quality. Muangsurin and Fuji both sprung to mind but I don't think they were on Moon's level. Chionoi maybe? More accomplished than Moon but I think Moon was a better fighter at his peak. You mentioned Sor Rungvisai earlier, him and Moon would probably be a classic actually. We'll see how his career goes in the near future but I'd take Moon to beat him in a war from what I've seen. It's tough to think of many like him really, even more remarkable that he was such an accomplished amateur with his style. The more successful ones have tended to be of the more refined boxer ilk overall.

Good to see you here! Thanks for the link, I can't get the vid to play though (and don't know why because I can't read Korean). If it's from 2010 it'd be around the time I first heard that Moon was in a bad way, so hopefully he's doing ok like you say.

Moon was like a man made out of Rock.

The human form of a tank.

Moon’s fine, doesn’t look like he was ever a fighter. A sharp, middle aged man who doesn’t even sound punchy (my mate met him last year)

Surprising given all the talk over the years, but he’s good as gold. Great to hear
