Firstly I'll just say that at the end of the day it's still a great move for boxing but who here would rather see a knockout system rather than the points system they're going for here? On the plus side we get to see plenty of quality match ups and if your favourite fighter has a bad night he has a shot for redemption. The negatives being that it drags the whole thing well out into 2011, lessens the tension and excitement of not knowing if your guy is gonna get knocked out of the whole thing at any moment and it might get a little boring seeing if one (or more) guys turn out to be not in the same league as the others and you still have to watch them get inevitably whooped for a minimum of 3 bouts (as required by the tournament format) before they are ejected from the contest. Discuss.
I thought extra points were provided for the KO? Also, if there's anything we should know from theatre of the unexpected, it's that styles make fights. Meaning : I could see taylor get coldcocked by two guys and completely school two others.
Just to alleviate any worries about any of the six not being able to continue, Showtime representative stated that there are back up fighters who will enter the tournament if need be, theough he did not name who they may be. But it is clear Bute is not one of them.
I agree with the prior couple of posters; the format's perfect in that we get to see how they'd fight against a variety of opponents, and one loss (and possibly even 2) isn't going to be the end of the road and they'll still get a fat payday even with them. There's also a significant incentive in the KO bonus, because there's going to be alot of fighters winding up 2-1 or 1-2 out of it. That should create consistently good fights for us. The way it's set up is almost like a league format with a playoff at the end of it; I think something like that is perfect for finding out who the real best fighter is out of the bunch as opposed to someone in a single elimination knockout tourney who might've gotten a lucky draw and never met their stylistic foil.
its likely that they just didn't want to make their press release too long and tedious. Those things have alot of marketing in them too. I'm sure the tie-breaker is based on a head to head matchup in the case of a points tie in the round-robin Also, i would assume that a draw in the semi-final = rematch
Their press kit today was over 30 pages long.[/quote] So imagine how long it would have been with even more details.
if it was a straight knockout competition then this tourney wouldn't even get of the ground the guarentee of another immediate chance/big fight is the clincher and what separates this from other tournaments one bad loss and a fighter would be discarded and wondering where to go from here, in this scenario he has the chance to redeem himself and even still win the tournament
Exactly. That's a big reason I hope the format takes off and others copy it in the future. It'll be nice not to hear about guys being ruined after one fight for awhile.
they have an answer for all these scenarios, can't remember where i read it (might've been a refeal blog)
Suppose someone like Alan Green has to come in as a replacement, but is behind a fight. (Everyone else has fought an extra time) Why is he fighting?
