What if Chad Dawson comes in to replace Jermaine Taylor? Or Joe Calzaghe? Or both? What about if Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones enter. Keep their date as a first round fight. And the winner of the tournament gets a bonus of ten million. Second place gets something like five. On top of their regular pay. That would make enough fights to keep them going almost ever other week around the year. Something like this is the future of boxing. What if HBO and showtime could co-produce/platform future events. What about a welterweight tournament in that structure. It would be awesome along with the 24/7 of eight, ten fighters.
Forget it. Dawson cannot make 168 if his life depended on it. He is not making LHW easily these days, so SMW is completely unrealistic.
Do you think the tournament style can take off? What about B-Hop, Calzaghe, Roy Jones? With an added bonus for winning? Do you think there could be a welterweight version with all the big names?
It seems like there's more talk of tournaments but 168 is the only place something like this could have happened. Welterweight has a lot of stars, thus a lot of egos, and there's no way you could get all of them into a tournament. 140 has some potential as well but 168 is the only division where there's so many guys who could be at the top, and there's no clear leader.
I think if anybody is replacing Taylor it will be Bika or Green, and a very long shot would be the winner of the Bute/Andrade fight.
