As much as i vaunt Eddie i have to correct this (and am surprised no-one else picked up on it). It wasn't a unification bout, Eddie had no title and was challenging for Spink's. The other Title holder Braxton/Qawi) was in attendance and involved in the melee (bikies etc) that followed the non fight.

I'm also thinking Eddie had a two fight peak

I think Scott-Saad would have been a great fight in '79. Scott was in great shape and wouldn't have gassed like Marvin Johnson. I still think Saad would have won because he was at his absolute peak then. I think the only reason the WBC and WBA wouldn't make him the #1 contender is because it would look bad in a PR way to have an inmate as champion. The money to make the fights was there. That's BS about not wanting to force their champions to fight in prison. They simply didn't want a prisoner to be their champion. If the money was right, you can bet Saad or Galindez or Johnson would have fought gladly fought Scott at Rahway for the title.

Scott was ripped with muscle.... And since he was locked-up, you know he never did roids... All natural through hard work on the rock pile...

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad said on camera that he was more than willing to give Scott a title shot rematch in Rahway, when the WBA still ranked him as a top contender. James foolishly said, "Well, God bless his heart, but who I really want is Saad Muhammad, the hypocrite!" Not long after that, the WBA withdrew recognition of Scott as a contender. The WBC never rated him. The only chance Scott had of ever getting Matthew in the ring was to leap at the opportunity to repeat his win over Eddie, then campaign for a unification bout in the event he succeeded in that rematch. It's always baffled me as to what James was thinking when he passed up the ready availability of a WBA Title shot. (I'll also say I wouldn't have liked his odds very much. Eddie was very animated when asked about a second go with Scott in Rahway, and he seemed eager to redeem himself for a defeat viewed live by millions when it originally took place. The only other time I saw him express a chip like that on his shoulder was when he annihilated Mwale.)

    Yes!!

I remember the fight where Qawi (Braxton) went back to Rahway to fight Scott.

It was Qawi's coming out party,as it were...

    The fights on Youtube somewhere...

We all thought that James Scott was unbeatable.

Then Jerry 'The Bull' Martin walked right through him, on NBC-TV National Television.
Lumped him up pretty good too!

I think Scott gave up boxing after his loss to Martin in the early 80s... Scott was already at or over age 35 by then...

Scott's record is 19-2-1 (11) KO's.... He just gave up after his dec. loss to Qawi... He should've gone on...

    NOTE!

Scott was sent to Rahway in 1975 on armed robbery charges with likely murder pending.... In 1981, Scott was convicted of murdering dope dealer Everett Russ in 1975 while robbing his dope supply... Scott received an official life sentence in 1981...

Scott used to pay the prison authorities for decent food during training

I think they released him for whatever crimes he originally committed and before the week was out a load of stuff happened with Scott being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Each time. Hmmm

Scott's story reminds me Hurricane Carter's.....in that they both did it

Dead on ... Mustafa was exceptionally talented but he was an inconsistent head case .. at his best he was an all time great ... amazing .. he eat himself out of shape going heavy and lost a dull decision to Snipes and did not get in shape for the Spinks bout ...
