I was thinking a Flyweight Tournament could be awesome before Segura lost. I thought Segura-Marquez could be todays closest equivalent of Barrera-Morales That looks like one seriously bad comparison after last week. Flyweight is a stacked division just a shame that it is a neglected lighter weight division. If Pong was North American there would be a chance of seeing him take on the likes of Viloria, Marquez, Mthlane, Gonzalez etc. but unfortunately for what ever reason Thai fighters rarely venture out of Asia to take on other champions.
Either Middleweight: Golovkin Pirog NJikam Chavez Jnr Macklin or Barker Quillin Light-middle: Kirkland Angulo Williams Lara Trout Molina or flyweight: Marquez Concepcion Wongjongcam Viloria Segura Gonzalez (if he can move up) plenty of others in each division to come in if they can't get all the fighters or for use as subs etc. I'd still rather see it changed so it was quicker, maybes a 8 fighter knock out tournament.
Three great line ups there and I like the straight knock out format with eight fighters too. But, it would be hard to get agreement from managers on the match ups etc.
could work at CW or MW, think the other divisons have champions who don't really need a Super 6 to get their name out there.
LMW would be a good one for a top contender but it would be hard to get all the belts together to make the final significant.
The problem with other formats is you don't really know whos the best unless everyone pretty much fights everyone. Thats the problem with a knock out tourny. The problem with the super six was the breaks in between. And we were a little unlucky with injuries etc. I think fighters have to commit to a fight every 4 months to keep the tournament fluid.
the only division where i would work is Light Middleweight and Light Welterweight now. You could do Light Heavy if Hopkins retires. This is for the following reasons; 1) You would have 6 fighters known by the US audience. Froch, Taylor, Ward, Dirrell, Kessler & Abraham had all had live fights on HBO & Showtime. At middleweight for example Golovkin, Geale & Macklin are unknown to the US audience. 2) You have 6 fighters that our at a competative level. Going into the Super 6 there were favourites but everyone had a shot at winning. At Middleweight Martinez is so clearly better than everyone else. 3) The fighters were young enough and therefore fit enough to follow the grueling schedule....or so we thought. Looking back what cost the Super Six is that Dirrell, Taylor and Kessler dropped out. That cannot happen again. This is why you cannot have a fighter like Hopkins in it, theres no way he would stick it through. At Light Middleweight you can pick from; Cotto (WBA) Alvarez (WBC) Bundrage (IBF) Baysangurov (WBO) Lara Molina vs Kirkland winner Rodrigurez Clottey Dziniruk Williams vs Ishiada winner Trout at 140lbs you could do Bradley (WBO) Peterson (IBF, WBA) Khan Maidana Rios Guererro
Thats just not how boxing works these days. Take all the fighters out of the tournement and i guarentee Abraham is the only one who fights as reguarly.
LMW would be good, surprised it hasn't been mentioned; Alvarez Cotto Kirkland Lara Pacquiao Paul Williams (Bradley Pryce as stand in.)
There are loads of stumbling blocks though, that's why it's hard to really make a tournament without knowing the boxers contracts etc. Considering it's showtime then you have to rule out boxers with deals with HBO so Khan would be out unless his contract is up or can be negotiated. I don't think the American's not knowing all the boxer's is that important but I do think they will want three American's or American based fighters involved. I think two titles is good enough, obviously people like Martinez aren't getting involved at this stage but if they are still strong when the tournaments over then they have a big fight on their hands with the winner. It needs to be shorter though, 2 and a half years is too long and their will always be drop outs if it's over a long time period.
fighters being known in the US is probably most important. how do you think Jermain Taylor got in the tournement in the first place? theres no way of dictating the time frame.
