I was just thinking about the points system and thought of something that could possibly happen. What if after the first round the standings are: Abraham - 3 Kessler - 2 Froch - 2 Ward -0 Dirrell - 0 Taylor - 0 Now, assume in stage two Kessler KOs Froch and Ward defeats Taylor, but what if by an upset Dirrell defeats Abraham. Than the standings are: Kessler - 5 Abraham - 3 Ward - 2 Froch - 2 Dirrell - 2 Taylor -0 Now after round 3, lets assume Ward defeats Dirrell, Kessler KOs Taylor, and Abraham defeats Froch (KO or not). Lets look at the standings now: Kessler - 8 Abraham - 5 or 6 Ward - 4 FROCH - 2 DIRRELL - 2 Taylor - 0 Technically, Kessler, Abraham, Ward, and Froch would move on to the semi finals, but do you really think it would be fair in this scenerio if Froch moved on to the semi finals if he had barely squeeked past a "green" Dirrell and gets KOed once, maybe twice, while Dirrell loses a controversial decision, wins in a suprise upset, and loses another close fight? Obviously this is all a big IF because the chances that Dirrell defeats Abraham are against him, but just think about what if this happened and what are yalls opinion on it.
Very little chance of Dirrell beating Abraham. But, on your scenario, if a fighter can't win more than one third of their matches, they can't really complain if they don't make the semis.
I agree, but in this scenerio Froch is in the same situation as Dirrell, if not worse, yet he still advances to the semis. IMO if it played out this way I think it would be unfair to Dirrell and Froch would be gettin a major gift.
Froch would be in the same situation and could be considered lucky. But Dirrell would have no-one to blame but himself.
Yea Dirrell could blame himself about the Froch loss, but he would make up for it if he beat Abraham, whereas Froch would do himself no favors by getting KOed twice. I just dont see how in this scenerio Froch would be deserving to advance to the semis
Neither would be particularly deserving to make the semis. But that's always a chance when you have a six man round robin with four qualifying.
This is not a perfect tournament, but it's good enough to bring us theese great fights. All the fights in the super six are very competitive so number 4 in the group will probably not be much more deserving of a place in the semi-final than number 5...
Yep, it'd suck. In other sports, teams make the playoffs over arguably more deserving teams all the time. But dem's the rules. That's the nature of round robin play. Could also build a scenario where a guy wins by KO with a hail mary punch in the 12th round, loses his next 2 and goes through over the guy that was dominating him who went on to win a fight and draw another.
