Superboxer over for now - What did ESB members think??

With the first series of 4 x cards of Superboxer concluded.

WHAT DID PEOPLE THINK??

If the ratings are accurate at 200,000 viewers, it's gotta be a run-away success IMO...and ironically it's been successful even though 3 of the 4 main bouts have been disasters:

1st night it was over inside a round with Billy Dib and the extra blow (that night also saw the Wither's elbow fiasco against Ammann).
2nd night was the only successful main event between 'Tiger' Bell vs Pupua.
3rd night it was the absolute non-event between Hoppa and Big Bob.
4th night saw Bika KO his opponent inside the first round.

Imagine if the main events had have worked out better!

The main positives IMO have been:

Boxing returning to FTA tv for the first time in so long!
The promise of more cards later in the year (we hope) as a result.
Bell vs Pupua (as above) - great performance of heart from Bell.
Pittman vs Ciampa - Pittman triumphed over a very awkward opponent.
McCracken vs Vea - a war eventually won by Vea but McCracken lost no friends.
Erin vs Angie - helped put women's boxing further on the map.
The 'discovery' of former amateur star Ged O'Mahony and young McConville.

WHAT DID OTHER PEOPLE THINK??

 

I reckon Karmichael Hunt will struggle to get a kick.

not bad, there is a market for this in OZ, boxing is real not full of robots and some people like non team sports, look they are going about it the right way it think, if they won't better cards they have to put up better money, it is as simple as that.

 

Reckon the cards were probably good enough for now (ie first up). Bit of bad luck that some bouts ended so quickly.

Would like to see Zappa, Geale, Tomlinson, Suzie Ramandan etc added next time, perhaps even Kali Meehan if possible. Also, if we are going to import opponents we must do better than the guy who was DQed for slipping over in crappy boots, and then quit last night in his Superboxer bout.

 

i realise a lot of indos and thais are here just to pad aussie boxers records but that guy is ridiculous.2 fights in a row hes dogged it.time to ban him for 6 months at least.

It was a success by all accounts. Looking forward to the second series. Done right, this can be a huge winner and many more people have digital tv and pay tv so the audience will get bigger.
More evenly matched fights would be good.

 

Hopefully with the ratings 'in the bank' ONE will be happy to throw more money at it in the second series.

The signs all appear good, and it certainly beats the hell out of paying for 2nd rate PPV cards - and we've been served up enough of those in recent times!

 

I heard they plan do do another show in Sept. Is that news guys? I haven't kept up to speed on what the dates were.

 

Good. Now lets throw some money into it and make it excellent.

Give the top draws more incentive to take a bigger challenge. The smaller fights outdid the main events on every level and every card I saw (missed the 2nd).

Get rid of the channel 10 motorsport commentary team. Get Matt (the guy who calls the mainevents) to do the whole show.

DONT replace the MC - but make sure he reads his notes properly

Get big Aussie names to appear and give their thoughts even though they're not fighting - Mundine, Tszyu, Green etc and talk about their upcoming fights... hell get celebrities (Russell Crowe for example) and other sporting greats in Australia to appear and draw other fans.

I dont understand what the hesitation is. Boxing needs attention right now and any one with a vested interest in the sport in Australia whether professional, amateur, fans or what have you need to get behind this program and support it in some way. It's to the benefit of us all!

 

make a rule right now, no imports unless top 10-20 ranked.
absolute disgrace some of the opponents and for an extra $10k per card they could get some half decent opponents.

 

Those are good figures, and it will be great when it continues, but the quality of fights has to get better if they want to keep, and increase those numbers.
I told a few mates about it, and got them to follow it, and most of them weren't too entertained with most of the fights (namely the Hoppa/Mirovic fight).

It's great that many people are now taking an interest, but at the same time, they're probably now seeing where Aussie boxing is on the world stage, and how it stacks up against other competing sports.

Still, it can only get better I feel, and I'll look forward to the 2nd series when it happens.
