Tyson/Smith was definitely not seen as a Superfight. Just a formality got Tyson to partially unify the HW title. Hagler/Hearns Hagler/Leonard Tyson/Spinks These were all seen as Superfights.
No but it was a highly touted title unification bout baed on how Smith won thew title months earlier ..
Depends what you appreciate seeing in a fight, I suppose. For me, it didn't need to be all action to live up to expectations. The quality of the boxing was about as good as you'll see.
I feel you, but something wasn't totally on point for that fight. Great fight, though I think it's missing something a little. Same as Thrilla N Manilla.
Leonard Duran III,, Since both were older, I expected far more toe to toe action. Pushing 39 Duran needed fighters to come to him and Ray danced around all night avoiding the fight,, smart strategy but a dreadful fight for those who paid money for it.
In the ring before the fight, ring announcer Chuck Hull literally announces to the crowd and tv audience, "The Dynamic Duo, in association with the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, presents the Super Fight, sponsored by Miller Lite." I get what you're saying, but Tyson-Smith was pretty heavily hyped (magazine cover stories promising a war) and anticipated before the fight, mostly as a result of Smith's quick kayo over Witherspoon combined with Tyson's meteoric rise. Hindsight tells us that the hype was unjustified, but it did exist. The fact that it was literally called "The Super Fight" going in and turned out to be a dud is what inspired this thread. I agree that the three fights you cited we're definitely seen as Superfights, and much bigger Superfights at that.
Maybe King tried to hype it. But as a 17 year old I was thinking "Damn Witherspoon was out of it physically and mentally and Bonecrusher took advantage - right place at the right time." It's true many thought Bonecrusher would go out on his shield and not meeklyy survive. His performance was a bit disappointing. But an anticipated Superfight? Not by those in the know.
