I’d only ever done a top 15 before, pretty happy with what I put out up to that point, I’m going to have a long hard think about 16 to 25 though
I was intending to edit mine but haven't got round to it yet. Any criticism on either names or postioning welcome as far as I'm concerned. @George Crowcroft - I'll go through yours soon!
I can't make any gaurntees, but if you want any fight reports for this feel free to message me, especially ones pre-1920
Let me take a quick break from butchering my lists in the smaller divisions and say this is one of the harder things I've ever done. I might want to change the rankings, and even people, 100 times before this goes to press, so to speak. The higher is weight I get the more confident I am in my picks, though probably not by much, lol. I know I wasn't asked, but I'm glad to be even attempting this task.
I think Kid Lavigne is really not getting enough love, especially relative to Walcott. Lightweight is staked as hell, so I don't think it's outrageous not to include him, but I think he's certainly worth considering. I posted a load of fight reports of his here https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/kid-lavigne-atg.621641/ On the Walcott fight, yeah the conditions were advantageous to Lavigne, but Lavigne was a small lightweight, and from going through all the reports I could find of the first Lavigne Walcott, I think Lavigne probably had any edge there was, and he certainly won the second, which was under more fair conditions, with the required weight being 135Ib at 6o'clock. I posted a lot on Kid McCoy, who is another I think is being overlooked https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/the-underrated-kid-mccoy.642474/
The problem is, Walcott could only win by ko, anything else was a Lavigne victory. Imagine if Mayweather fought Pacquiao and inserted that into the contract. Its hard taking anything from that fight. Couple with the struggles Walcott had making the weight. You'd have a hard time justifying Lavigne over Erne and Elbows imo. As for McCoy. He has a much better claim than Lavigne imo. He has that loss to Ted White which I haven't found anything about. He was a dominant MW for 2 years and then left the division. He had decent results as a HW but his claims to greatness surely come from his MW reign, which was short.
Neither were half as established as Mayweathe and Pacquiao when they fought the first time, and that doesn't really discount their second fight which Lavigne won emphatically. Senya posted a report of the White fight if you're interested https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...-conqueror-of-kid-mccoy.622433/#post-19623284 Seems odd to me to make a big deal of out a loss to Ted White, when McCoy was mostly pretty consistent, and White seems to have been a pretty respectable operator, and it was only 10 2min rounds, so a bit of a short odd fight
What I'm saying is, no fighter would be given a credit for winning when the opponent can only win the fight via ko, anything else is a loss. The rematch doesn't get discounted as such, but his struggles with the weight were well known. I'll have a read of that report. I didn't make a big deal, I said I couldn't find anything on it.
Here's a fun game. Look at the ATG list published by the Ring Mag in 1950. Discount anyone on your own lost since that date, and see how your ranking of the pre 1950 greats compares with the Ring.
