Calzaghe came to Germany to beat up Mario Veit. Why didn't Calzaghe come to Berlin to beat up Ottke? :yep

Ottke didn't want to fight calzaghe. Even in Germany. I agree he should be in the hall of fame. Nothing wrong with being the second best super middleweight

CST which fights did you think he deserved to lose?

Poor reffing aside I actually thought he just shaved Mitchell on points when i watched it

I know Veit beat Markus Beyer numerous times in the unpaid ranks who was also another quality German amateur - 274 Fights - 235 Win (although it says he only had 39 amateur bouts on his Wiki page, winning all but 4 of them. 39 amateur fights over the course of at least 8 years and likely even longer?) I read Veit beat Beyer 5 times but I don't know if it's true or not. I think Veit beat him too though.

I've no idea if Ottke and Veit fought each other. I'm sure their paths must have crossed at some point. They were supposed to fight each other in the final of a Multi Nations tournament in 1995 but Veit must've suffered an injury in the semis because Ottke won on a WO.

Multi Nations Tournament - Liverpool, England - June 1995

75kg Sven Ottke GER Mario Veit GER WO.

Ottke actually beat both the May brothers in the German National Championships in 1992

    Quarterfinal

1992-10-29 81kg Sven Ottke win Ruediger May RSC 2

    Final

1992-10-31 81kg Sven Ottke win Torsten May 21:7

Ottke was infinitely better than Gatti. It's not even comparable.

HOF is not the ultimate recognition of someone's greatness. At times it is not even relevant.

Here's one judges opinion on Ottke's HOF worthiness:

"However, at least four of his title fights reeked of overly-friendly judging (Mads L****n, both Charles Brewer fights and Robin Reid). Had Ottke lost any of those fights, as many felt he should have, what effect would that have had on his standing? Those doubts were too much for me to affix the checkmark."

just checked ottke v larson fight took place just before esb crashed so all the posts before that date were deleted

i found a post i made years ago when my memory would have been fresher

" he had great footspeed and defensive abilties.

hand speed was ok but nothing special, it was his legs that were special.

brewer beat him in the first fight, larson fight was very close but i had ottke up by 1 point, i a fight were there were only perhaps 30 punches landed by both fighters in the entire fight.

reid fight should have been declared a no contest and the ref and promoter looked into.

but ottke could box, made glen johnson look silly and limited.

but ottke had many many close fights for a reason.

the ottke corner new the scores of the judges after each round and had a huge huge advantage because of that.

it meant he never had to take risks to win fights and risk getting caught by punches.

the l****n fight for example was incredibly close , yet ottke knowing he only had to see out the last round without being decked never threw a sinlge punch in the last round got on his bike and ran around the ring with larson not able to do anything and ottke i think won by split descion.

i thought he beat starie/markusson/brewer 2/ clearly in fights sometimes called rrobberies.

johnson himself i think insinuates he was robbed, he was not , he was outboxed easily and then ottke got on his bike and coasted knowing johnson needed a ko to win.

He agreed to. Ottkes team didnt think Calzaghe was popular enough and that Calzaghe would have to build a profile in Germany for a while, but fortunately the other 21 fighters he defended against must have been popular enough

You have to look at overall resume and Ottke was at the end of his career in what was a debateable fight, but overall look at who Ottke fought and what he did at SMW -

13th fight when he won a world title

Ottke made 21 title defences and was a winner of 22 world title fights
