I'm probably one of Ottke's biggest and.most devoted fan. I wouldn't rate him over the ATG Jones though. On the other hand, people completely underestimate Ottke based on the Reid fight. Both are incorrect in my view. Actually I was going to make a thread just before I saw this pleading for Jones to retire. Seeing someone of his caliber reduced to the point where hardly anyone remembers how special he once was is a shame beyond words.

Its funny when your ilk dismisses Byrd's win over Holyfield in 2002 as "Holyfield was shot" but when Toney beat him in 2003 it suddenly had value :rofl

He retired undefeated because he only fought as a pro for seven years, a/k/a he was skeerd. Aside from the Montel DQ, which was b.s., Jones fought for 14 years before the Tarver KO. 14 years > 7 years and Jones Jr's competition was superior. Anyone here think Sven Ottke would've fought John Ruiz and made it out with win? I didn't think so.

Even the trolls here KNOW how great Roy was.

He's a good guy as well I don't get the trolling at all.

How long was he supposed to fight?

He turned pro at 30 after competing in three Olympics and more than 300 amateur fights.

In those seven years as a pro, he made 21 successful title defenses. (Tied all-time with ... Joe Calzaghe.)

Yes, 21 defenses of his "title" even though everyone knows that his titlist peer Calzaghe was better than him. If people want to say someone's better than an ATG like Jones then they need to pick someone who fought for more than 7 years as a pro. Roy has more KOs alone than Ottke has total wins. I don't care about that *0*, he didn't fight the best competition.
Why didn't Ottke ever fight Calzaghe? Because he was hiding out in Germany and he would've lost, period.

I frankly remember when Ottke and Calzaghe were champs at the same time.

Ottke defeated Charles Brewer twice before Calzaghe faced him. He fought Pudwill before Calzaghe. Ottke unified against Byron Mitchell, and then Calzaghe fought Mitchell and was nearly stopped.

Ottke unified before Calzaghe did. Calzaghe spent most of his reign playing second fiddle to Ottke when both were champs.

Why didn't they meet? Ottke wouldn't fight outside of Germany. Calzaghe wouldn't fight outside the UK.

When Ottke and Calzaghe were champs at the same time, I was posting on boxing boards and people were complaining about Calzaghe staying home and not fighting Ottke - because Calzaghe's WBO belt wasn't considered nearly as good in the late 90s and early 2000s as the unified WBA and IBF belts were.

When Ottke retired with both the IBF and WBA belts after making 21 title defenses, that's when Calzaghe made his move.

Lacy won Ottke's vacant IBF belt, and Calzaghe beat him. Siaca won Ottke's vacant WBA belt, and Kessler took that.

Calzaghe closed out his career strong.

But Calzaghe wasn't considered the better of the two when Ottke and Joe were fighting. Hell, when Jeff Lacy won the vacant belt, Lacy was favored to beat Calzaghe. (That's how ligjtly regarded Calzaghe and his WBO belt were at the time.)

I think he has a better pro record than Ottke. But when they were both active, Ottke was considered the more successful champ of the two. Ottke had more belts. Ottke defended more times when both were champs at the same time.

When Ottke retired, Calzaghe passed him. But when Ottke was the WBA and IBF champ, Joe was content to stay home.

Also, I'm not comparing Roy Jones and Sven Ottke. I'm just talking about Calzaghe and Ottke.

Didn't Calzaghe offer to go to Germany though?

I don't know. He may have. He didn't have a lot of bargaining power.

Back then, people routinely dumped WBO belts just to get rated in the other organization's rankings.

And he didn't go. So, who knows.

Ottkes trainer mentioned that Ottke didnt want to know against Calzaghe.

Have a look at these links

Calzaghe clearly stated he was happy to fight Ottke in Germany
