How many of his fights were actually robbery's, and which ones?

Or is it just the case that perhaps due to his nationality, or popularity - he doesn't get the credit he perhaps deserves. Perhaps he was actually quite skilled. What are peoples thoughts?

    It is essentially a myth.

I thought Brewer I was pretty close, I think I had it for Brewer but Brewer II was Ottke's.

I feel the Reid fight was a clear robbery, which ever way you look at it and I think I had Larsen edging him.

Other then that most fights he won fair and square, even if he only did just enough. Which was sort of his gameplan anyway.

Tate I had some controversy about it because of the ending. But Tate II showed who was better.

He was a good fighter albeit a protected one with a boring style and approach.

Exceptional achievement but a frighteningly boring boxer to watch. He benefited alot from his celebrity status in Germany as well as the usual hometown refereeing. Apart from the Mundine bout i found almost all of his fights way to mind numbing to watch. Still he was a very crafty and wiley veteran with a slick amateur style.

The win over Johnson was fair and impressive. Johnson looked slow as hell. Reid was the only cast iron robbery IMO.

Well he KOed Mundine so that was not a robbery.:rofl:patsch

How bad is your Chin when you are one of Sven Ottke's 6 KO victim's.

It wasn't actually his chin, he has a glass temple.

It wasnt really a robbery per se as it was very hard to score. BUT the referre was shocking. I dont know who on earth he was but he was hopeless..

About as bad as it gets - although not as bad as Amir Khan.

Clearly an underrated fighter, people simply refuse to recognize him what he is: one of the best defensive masters of the last 25 years.

The many close fights and claimed robberies has a lot to do with that, especially the undefeated record. Had he lost to Reid - which in fact was very controversial, but the only one you can say was actually controversial, some others were either close or could've gone either way - people would look at him differently. Hell, people would look at HIM actually!

At the time Ottke and Calzaghe fought everyone the division could offer (except each other of course), and how stunning is that the guy regarded as one of the most feather fisted champs of... all times, knocked out Mundine was he was (the only time) behind on the official scorecards... what a weird KO that was...

The myth of controvery is based on the many fighters who tried, but failed to beat the German. Because his fights were hardly available outside of Germany, it were the fighters' tales that many fans had to trust. In reality, as boring as he was, he barely got caught with clean punches, and although he never possessed a knockout punch, he usually was the one who landed clean...

Arthur Abraham is Ottke Light (very light) with a punch. I always wanted to see Calzaghe-Ottke. The ultimate offense vs. the ultimate defense...

This one is from back then, when there were actually some comments and talks between the Welsh and the German champion. The only photo together with the 2 champs as far as I know! :D

IIRC Ried was robbed more by the ref than by the judges. Is that correct?

Ottke was a good fighter. Unfortunately, he happened to go undefeated and that was a terrible thing for his legacy.

Not only was the Reid fight an outright robbery, he was complicit in the scam due to his frequent interactions with the referee. I've never seen anything like it.

Not only that, someone who posts here (sean?) has said repeatedly that Ottke was given the official scores between rounds, an obvious and flagrantly unfair advantage if true.

He's better than he generally is perceived, but given his actions during the Reid fight, I can't say I feel sorry for him.

Everyone wanted to see that fight back then but both men were making easy money at home and Joe wouldnt fly abroad and Ottke would not leave Germany. This being said Joe feasted on alot of Svens left overs. Sven`s body of work resume and title defences were superior to Joes at the time plus he unified hence why he was seen as the divisions number 1. Joe only came into his own globally once Sven retired and he faced Jeff Lacy for Svens old belt.
