the only robbery ottke was ever involved in was the reid fight, all other matches were he supposedly was given a gift decision were in fact close matches where he usually did a bit more action to nick the verdict. Prime Ottke would have outpointed eubanks.
See I think Eubank is head and shoulders above Ottke but sometimes Eubank could become disinterested in bouts and fall asleep basically and Ottke would take advantage of that.
yeah, eubank was the more talented fighter, but Ottke's style would have given him fits. You didn't even really have to be good to give Eubank a lot of trouble if you used your feet a lot, kept things minimalist and tidy and made him consistently come forward to lead\ make the fight. He just wasn't comfortable at all with it.
The fans don't win, that's for goddamn sure. There'd be more posing than punches thrown. Eubank wins on neutral turf. Ottke wins in Germany. Either way, it'd be a boring fight.
strangely, Eubank's amateur fight with Mario Davis shows very skilful front-foot distance-closing (as do the James Canty/Randy Smith fights). But against Franky Moro, Dan Sherry and Ray Close, he was a feet-crossing lunger. Odd.
I never liked ottkes style but have to give him credit for his speed his reflexes and his high workrate, at least as long as he was in his prime. Only when these assets started to erode in the last year of his active career did his matches become closer, and when he realized that he called it a day, before that time he would usually soundly outpoint his opponents. Come forward type of fighters he would dispose of easiest while when Reid fought him like a counterboxer in the first part of their fight Ottke was in trouble. Ottke had the attitude "If I get hit in the ring I must be doing something wrong", a clever but for a pro boxer slightly questionable attitude imo. For being so elusive and quick footed, and for getting away with excessive clinching in most of his fights he managed to get hit very few times. He put very little power into his punches in order to save energies and maintain a high workrate, Roy JOnes noticed this and acknowledged Ottkes tactics. At the same time all of this meant he was a pretty boring fighter to watch, generally speaking.
I think Ottke could upset Eubank here with that awkward busy style of his. Especially post-Watson, when he was happy to just show up and coast through fights.
