Legendary German boxing trainer Ulli Wegner offers his thoughts on who the best fighters he's trained. He's trained a lot of good fighters but he rates 'The Phantom' the best of them. Sometime greatness is so subtle it takes an expert eye to recognize it. That's the difference between hardcore and casual fans. :deal

Ulli Wegner is one of the most successful boxing coaches of modern times in Europe.

Born in the now-Polish city of Szczecin, the German trainer has worked in the sport for over 40 years, amassing considerable success in the amateur ranks guiding the German team to a plethora of medals at Olympics, World and European championships and Military Games and more recently the pros.

Since making the transition to pro boxing he has worked with six world champions.

Sven Ottke (WBA and IBF super middleweight), Markus Beyer (three-time WBC super middleweight), Arthur Abraham (IBF middleweight and two-time WBO super middleweight), Yoan Pablo Hernandez (RING and IBF cruiserweight), Marco Huck (WBO cruiserweight) and Cecilia Braekhus (IBF, WBA, WBC, and WBO welterweight).

Prior to boxing Wegner was in the Army in the old East Germany.

I saw a boxing contest at our army boxing club, ASK Rostock, Wegner told RingTV.com through Thomas Schlabe of Sauerland Event, recollecting how he first became interested in the sport. Then I asked one of the coaches if I could try out boxing. They laughed at first but were impressed by my performance.

Normally, you would have go through a tough audition before joining an army sports club in the former GDR (East Germany) but they asked me to go right away, which was an exception.

He boxed 176 times as an amateur and his biggest success came when he won a national championship in 1970. He retired and worked as an amateur coach for over a decade. Then, after the fall of the Berlin wall, he took up a new post as national coach to the DABV (German Amateur Boxing Association) in 1991. There, Wegner aided his country in winning an estimated 150 medals at various tournaments.

He finally made the move to professional boxing in 1996 after the Atlanta Olympics and has worked with Sauerland Event fighters ever since.

2010 International Hall of Fame inductee Wilfried Sauerland, founder Sauerland Event, has long known Wegner and speaks highly of him.

In 1996 we were in competition with Universum Box Promotion and we both tried to sign boxers and trainers before the Olympics, Sauerland said whilst explaining their back story. I got in touch with Ulli Wegner, as I had also an eye on Markus Beyer, who was trained by him. We had a meeting in Berlin and we liked each other and agreed to work together on the same day.

I have never regretted this decision and we worked amicably from there. Ullis strength is his ability to have his boxers come into the ring in top condition, highly motivated and with a tactical plan.

Although Wegner has enjoyed many successes he points to one he considers his best moment as a trainer.

Ottke becoming a world champion versus Brewer, he said.

Wegner still has goals he wishes to achieve in boxing: I want to form some more world champions; with Jack Culcay, Mateusz Masternak and Kubrat Pulev I will get the chance to do so. And obviously I want Abraham to defend his title a few more times.

The 73-year-old lives in Berlin with his wife, Margret; the couple has three children and four grandchildren. Wegner is known to enjoy politics and helps out in his home region.

Wegner took some time out to speak to RingTV.com about the best fighters he has trained in 10 key categories.

BEST JAB
Arthur Abraham: You would not believe it but over time, Arthur Abraham has developed the best jab of boxers I did or still train. Just watch his last fights and you will see that his jab is his primary weapon nowadays.

BEST DEFENSE
Sven Ottke: He had the most important asset to be not just a good- but a world-class operator inside the ring anticipation. He knew where to move to not to get hit. Thats why he got named Phantom.

BEST CHIN
Ottke: Thats hard to say. I always trained and still train my boxers to hit and not to get hit. To answer this question in another way I was worried the least when Sven Ottke stepped into the ring.

FASTEST HANDS
Ottke: Ottke is naturally gifted.

FASTEST FEET
Ottke: One of the most evasive fighters I have ever seen.

SMARTEST
Ottke: Ottke was the smartest to effectively implement tactics inside the ring. Abraham is clever ****yzing strengths and weaknesses of his opponent inside the ring. The problem is that he is not always focused and doesnt bother about every foe. Thats when he gets problems. He tends to underestimate opponents.

STRONGEST
Marco Huck and Abraham: Both are naturally very strong. Hernandez one of the biggest hearts (he has) already stepped into the ring when he was ill or injured, but in the last two years (of his career) I could no longer take the responsibility for him to fight when not being at 100 percent.

BEST PUNCHER
Ottke: You might laugh about my next statement but the truth is that Sven Ottke was the hardest puncher. The problem was that due to his style and his ring intelligence, he couldnt or didnt want to open up to showcase it. You could see it once, when he had to go for broke versus (Anthony) Mundine. Otherwise, Arthur Abraham has one hell of a punch.

BEST SKILLS
Markus Beyer: Markus Beyer was the most skillful when focused on the task ahead. Unfortunately, he let himself be distracted easily by his entourage and surroundings. A close second would be Sven Ottke.

BEST OVERALL
Ottke: Easily Sven Ottke when talking about a total package, he was the prodigy that came closest to it.

Roy Jones Jr. has been an outspoken critic of the prosecution of Michael Vick for his participation in a dogfighting ring, and has boasted in the past about raising roosters for ****fighting on his 88-acre ranch in Cantonment, Fla., where he also houses pit bulls, horses and cows.

On Friday, after practicing with the Knicks in Greenburgh to promote his Jan.19 fight with Felix Trinidad at the Garden, Jones admitted he'd allowed the pit bulls he breeds on his property to fight.

"I was (letting them fight) to a degree, but not like that serious," Jones Jr. told the Daily News after reporters had peppered the light-heavyweight with questions about the Knicks and his fight with Trinidad. "I just let my dogs get down five, 10 minutes, 15 minutes. Maybe like the longest I let them go was a half-hour, but I never let them fight to the death 'cause I can't take that.

"I knew about it, but I wasn't going to take it that seriously. I couldn't see my dogs fight to the death 'cause they were too close of friends to me."

John Goodwin, the deputy manager of animal fighting issues for the Humane Society of the United States, said it is a felony under Florida law to allow dogs to fight on one's property.

"If you put your dogs down there for 10, 15 minutes, that's a felony in Florida," Goodwin said.

It is unclear when Jones last allowed his dogs to fight on his property, but by talking openly about the subject, he may have opened himself up to a criminal investigation, according to Goodwin.

"If he's admitting that he's fighting his dogs, then they need to go down there with a search warrant and confiscate those dogs," Goodwin said.

In a 2003 interview with Esquire, Jones indicated that he prepares roosters to engage in ****fighting, which is a felony in 49 states, including Florida. Jones also owns a ****fighting ring in Louisiana, where attendees bet on staged fights between roosters, according to the Humane Society. Louisiana is the last state to allow legal ****fighting, but a law banning the sport will take effect in August 2008.

"It's an open secret that he's involved in animal fighting," Goodwin said. "Why the authorities haven't done anything is a mystery to me."

In 2003, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals drafted a letter to the Escambia County (Fla.) Sheriff calling for an investigation into Jones' suspected involvement in ****fighting.

Dan Shannon, a spokesman for PETA, said "it's not really surprising" to hear that Jones talked openly about allowing dogs to fight on his property.

"The kind of person who fights roosters is likely to fight dogs," Shannon said. "At the very least, local authorities need to go take a look."

Deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office did not return messages left last night. A receptionist at the sheriff's office said Jones had never been investigated for dogfighting.

Jones said he never wagered money on his dogs or allowed them to participate in organized dogfights.

Jones said he let his dogs fight because they "liked" it. If I had one that did like it, I'd let them go for a few minutes, but that was it. But I never got it to reach the other level," Jones said, in reference to letting his dogs fight to the death. "I don't think I could stomach the other level. I understand it, but I don't think I could stomach it."

The Humane Society's Goodwin said what Jones talks about is one of the first steps in training pit bulls for competitive fighting. "Ten- to 15-minute fights are not done as pleasure," Goodwin said. "They're done as schooling."

Goodwin said the initial fight Jones described is called a "roll," in which an inexperienced pit bull fights for a short period of time to see how the animal reacts to fighting.

"What he described to you is a standard schooling process to prepare young dogs for the fighting environment," Goodwin said.

Shannon, the PETA spokesman, added that dogs are not naturally inclined to fight for a half-hour.

"I don't think dogs do that," Shannon said. "They are trained to do that."

A person prosecuted for possessing dogs for fighting under Florida law could face up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine.

Jones said he didn't think Vick's jail sentence of 23 months on federal dogfighting charges matched the crime.

"It is illegal and you have to be punished for what you do, but he has to go away for two years and take away his whole career," Jones said. "It's kind of backwards. It's like people care (less) about hurting one another than they do animals."

Roy Jones Jr should have "Kept It Cute" as well because ever since they broke up two weeks ago, Linda has been blasting him on her Instagram page. From posting text messages, to photos, she has been letting him have it. It's unclear why they broke up (besides the fact Roy is married with kids) but he clearly picked the WRONG heart to break because she has dropped a peen pic and word is she has more!

No one should even be voting on this when this guy omits the ko for Jones which is the only possible result. Jones is the best fighter in history at 160 and 168 and Ottke would not have known which way he went. Mundine had 3 amature and 11 pro fights when he was thrown in against Ottke and was a couple of points in front when he got kod and that was after he had 2 points deducted. He was kod because of exhaustion rather than anything else because he was more akin at that stage to football training than boxing training. How do you think Mundine would have gone against Jones? We all know that Jones has virtually embarrassed himself since he fought at lhw but at mw and smw he was unbeatable. Any who thinks Ottke beats RJJ is either clouded by their hatred of Jones or worse still dksab.

Gotta go with Sven by DQ. I can see RJJ being disqualified for repeatedly punching Ottke in the face which as proven in the Reid fight is against the strict 'no punching Sven in the face' rule in operation during his title reign.
