Yeah because the judges in the US give the not to fighters whose defence is their face and who stumble forward landing no punches
Ottke got cut and some people think the fight should have been stopped. With other fighters they would admire the toughness and braveness of fighting on. With Ottke it was all corrupt. :good
Hypothetical (mis)match time! Ottke vs Calzaghe, Toney, Jones Jr, Hopkins, McClellan, Benn, Eubank, McCallum, everyone in the super six, Bute 168 lbs, OUTSIDE of Ottke's backyard. Come on German fans...make my day! :smooch
This is how a lot of people judge Ottke's record. http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=7203&cat=boxer Mads Larsen - MD - Robbery David Starie - Only given the decision by 2/3 points - Robbery Byron Mitchell - SD - Robbery Rudy Markussen - Only won by 4 points - Robbery Charles Brewer - SD - Robbery Glen Johnson - Only won by 2/3 points - Robbery Charles Brewer - SD - Robbery
He must have done something right he had 21 world title defences, won WBA & IBF titles, won the IBF title in his 13th fight and has wins over Brewer, G Johnson, S Branco, Mundine, Markussen, Mitchell, Starie, Larsen, Krajnc & Reid. But One of the big problems is that alot of his wins were debatable to alot of people, his 2 wins over Brewer and win over Mitchell were SDs, his win over Larsen was by MD and alot of people think that his wins over Reid, Markussen and Johnson could have gone the other way also. Out of the 10 names I listed who he beat 6 of them have people arguing the result. Ottke also openly didnt want to face Calzaghe, to prove himself in the division. Still for the 6 results that are argued against him there are also people arguing for him and his record and names on it is impressive. I think Ottke was a good boxer who also had alot of luck, that helped him along, but if those disputed results hadnt of gone his way with the same fighters he would never have been a world champ and would have had a final record of 28 - 6 but would still have had some decent wins against Mundine, Branco, Starie & Krajnc
I wasn't saying they were all robberies, you seem to have misjudged my post. I said that seems to be how a lot of people look at Ottke's record and judge who he 'lost' against without actually watching the fights. As much as the Reid fiasco still winds me up, Ottke was actually a good boxer and very savvy defensively. I've said time and again, he did not lose as many fights as people suggest.
Was always curious to know though, what were the scores in the ottke-mundine fight at the time of the ko? Not down on boxrec at all, seemed like an extremely close fight, which probably means in germany that ottke was ahead by 7 rounds.
If I had to teach a young boxer how to become a first rate technical fighter, I would use Ottke as my model. His footwork and balance were superb and his shot selection was first class. Before he retired he was allowed to rob a few, including Reid . But for those looking for technical ability he was a joy to watch.
