I just can't decide.:think, it's a toss up, maybe Whitaker has defense, but Floyd has the power. They are both great counter punchers.atsch
Complicated fight. I think floyd had more speed and was a more accurate puncher...NAHH floyd has trouble with southies and Whitaker was one of the best....Whitaker probably 7-5 or 8-4.
no way a crack head like whitaker could handle a fighter of floyds caliber, was he undefeated with 5 championships in 5 weight divisions all before the age of 30. just thought i would get that one in before esb's resident jackass comes in with it. whitaker tooo skilled and too active. 8-4
It's more than that to me. How does anyone determine which accomplishment or record trumps another. Does 5 titles in 5 weight classes (not all real titles) trump 3 lineal titles in 3 weight classes at the same time? Is it better than 20 title defenses in one weight class? How do we rank accomplishments? My answer? We can't....not objectively.
you are correct. it is all a matter of criteria. imo the dominance of duran at 135, and hagler at 160 renk highly. simply because they established true dominance of their respective divisions by leaving no stone unturned. others would say hagler never moved up inn weight, and view it as a negative. imo moving up has become overrated with all of the bs belts out there now. there is a soft beltholder at practically every division
I guess it's also a matter of who was in the division at the time. I mean, I don't rate the MW division Hopkins was in as a great division. Certainly not a golden era. But he is more revered than Virgil Hill who I discussed earlier in another thread, who over 2 seperate title reigns defended his title 19 times, losing only to 3 HoF fighters over than span, two of which are top 30 ATG. So how high do we rank Hill based on this accomplishment? Hopkins himself lost to one of the fighters that beat Hill.
Whitaker would not dominate Mayweather. Anyone who thinks Whitaker shuts out Mayweather via wide decision, leave the thread now. Whitaker's jab was a serious jolting weapon, which he also used effectively going backwards. It was like a pumping piston, in the same mould as Hearns and Holmes. Mayweather's lead right would seldom catch Whitaker cleanly, as when Whitaker pulled out of range after being inside, he kept that left glove tucked into his chin. Whitaker was also busier inside, and went to the body more often. I don't think Mayweather is quite as effective at close quarters, with probably the uppercut up close the only significant weapon he has over Whitaker inside.
