Possibly, but it would be a bout of tactical genius. Personally, I think Sweet Pea was a better defensive fighter and I believe he was a much more fluent offensive-minded fighter when he needed to be. I think that equates to a close but clear decision for Sweet Pea, but this would be a dream match for those fond of defensive prowess.
Well. Mayweather threw more punches at 130/135. But Im not saying he would win, but I think it would be a Floyd goes on the offensive, Sweet Pea shows off his defensive skills then they swap and Floyd shows off his skils. Ive seen VERY little of sweet I just know hes a great defensive master with an underrated offense, so Im not going to pick a winner, but it would be a fight a lot of people would want to see.
this will not be a boring fight, whitaker has good offense, he stays right infront of you, and if mayweather decides to let his combos go like he did against hatton it would be very entertaining.
Mayweather at both 147 and 135, but I think the fight at 135 is closer. Even though Mayweather was more offensive at 130-135, I think he has gained a lot of strength from moving up to 147, an those extra 17 lbs of muscle would have allowed him to out muscle Pea a bit.
Indeed. I recently saw Pea's rematch with McGirt, and Sweet Pea, like Mayweather, could throw every punch in the book with textbook precision.
Btw I think at 135 this fight would not be boring as well! Its quite possible they would just stand right in front of each other taking turns on offense and countering. If it came to this, who could say who wins? Its a fight I would LOVE to see though.
James "Buddy" McGirt was such a good fighter too man.. I hardly ever see folks mention him on ANY boxing discussions on line, and never here. Though of course I've only been reading ESB's bulletin board for a few days..
McGirt was damned good! When those two fought, they were both amongst the best P4P'ers in the sport, and Sweet Pea totally outlcassed Buddy in that rematch. It was an entertaining contest. I still think Sweet Pea got the shaft against DLH, but I remember being shocked when Trinidad actually dropped Pea en route to what many consider Sweet Pea's first real defeat.
Whitaker UD His southpaw stance, right jab, punch output, and his own great defense would give him the edge.
Sweet Pea by UD. Comfortable UD. Everything but power (and speed Id give it slightly to Floyd....slightly), Sweet Pea did better.
I like both guys but @ 130 135 mayweather was more aggressive and a harder puncher on top of great boxing skills.
But Whitaker was more accurate, threw WAY more (Floyd was NOT more aggressive...definately not at 135!!!), from way more angles, etc. Alot of people mistake the real Sweet Pea for the fighter that fought Oscar and Tito....right out of rehab I might add....as the GOD that fought at the lower weights. Trust me when I say (and I have seen EVERY Whitaker fight available), power was the ONLY thing that Floyd had a distinct advantage over Pernell. Speed is arguable....but is too close to be called an advantage for either man.
